50 for 50 contest: Top 50 moments revealed, voting begins May 5th

OTTAWA-The submissions are in, 50 moments/stories have been selected and placed into groups, and now it is time to determine the top moment/story in the 50-year history of Baseball Canada.

Beginning on Monday, May 5th at 12pm EST, you can have your say by selecting a moment or story that you feel is one of Baseball Canada’s finest.

Here is how the contest works:

Preliminary Round (May 5-July 11)

The preliminary round of voting will take place over a 10-week period beginning Monday, May 5th and wrapping-up on Friday, July 11th.

During the preliminary round a new group of five moments/stories will be posted on baseball.ca each Monday at 12pm EST (see schedule below). Voters will then have the opportunity to select the moment or story that they feel should move on to the semi-final round.

Semi-final Round (July 14-July 25)

Once the preliminary round is completed, ten moments/stories will remain and will be split into two groups of five.

The first semi-final round will begin on Monday, July 14th and conclude on Friday, July 18th, while the second semi-final round will commence on Monday, July 21st and conclude on Friday, July 25th.

At the end of the semi-final round, two moments/stories will remain and go head-to-head to determine a winner of the Baseball Canada 50 for 50 contest.

Final Round (July 28-August 1)

Final round voting will take place from Monday, July 28th – Friday, August 1st.

The winner of the 50 for 50 contest will be revealed during the week of the Baseball Canada Cup which takes place August 6th-11th.

Week 1 (Voting: May 5th 12pm ET-May 9th 10am ET)

Week 2 (Voting: May 12th 12pm ET-May 16th 10am ET)

3) Umpire Stu Scheurwater makes MLB debut (April 2-14)

4) First true National Championship (1973, Midget in Barrhead, AB)

5) Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins coaches at 1987 Pan Am games

Week 3 (Voting: May 19th 12pm ET-May 23rd 10am ET)

1) Manitoba wins Junior National in 2010

2) Loewen/Francis taken in Top 10 in 2002 MLB Draft

3) Larry Walker 1st inductee onto Baseball Canada Wall of Fame (2008)

4) Launch of NCCP

5) Canada dominated at 2012 WBC Qualifier

Week 4 (Voting: May 26th 12pm ET-May 30th 10am ET)

1) Saskatchewan wins 1994 Baseball Canada Cup

2) Baseball Canada is established in 1964

3) Trevor Grieve umpires 2013 WBC Final

4) Jimmy Van Ostrand wins 2012 IBAF Player of the Year

Week 5 (June 2nd 12pm ET-June 6th 10am ET)
