Baseball Québec to open women's baseball academy

OTTAWA – Baseball Québec announced on Tuesday that beginning in September they’ll be offering a year-round training opportunity for elite female baseball players.

The program will be structured similar to the Academie du Baseball Canada (ABC) and operate out of the Claude –Robillard Centre in Montréal.

"Our strategic plan for women's baseball is clear. We want to offer the best possible baseball experience to our athletes; optimal coaching twelve months a year and a competitive competition enabling them to aim for the highest levels of the sport,” said Baseball Québec Executive Director, Maxime Lamarche. “The creation of the Women's ABC is the cornerstone of the renewal of our program of excellence.”

Athletes participating in the academy will be able to combine baseball activities with their studies at the high school, CEGEP and University levels.

The schedule will be busy on the field this fall with a showcase event planned against players from Ontario before the program hits the road in November to play US-based teams in Florida. Plans are also in place for athletes to participate in Baseball Canada’s annual Development Camp next February in Cuba.

"Our goal is to allow our athletes to train, go to school and compete against the best athletes in the best possible environment,” added baseball Québec Vice-President, Julie Gosselin. “Our team at Baseball Québec and the ABC are ready for this new adventure that marks an important milestone for the development of women's baseball in Quebec.”

Baseball Québec is offering an information session for players (16U-21U) and their families on Tuesday, July 18th. The session is open to those residing in Québec or outside of the province that have an interest in the new program.

The information session will cover the ABC’s annual plan, process for identifying athletes along with the academic component to the program. Attendees will be invited to attend a baseball game that evening featuring the 17U ABC against the touring U-18 Cuban National Team.
