Baseball Canada Championships: Hosts and favourites impress at 13Us in Moncton

Three teams remained undefeated after the first day of the DQ 13U Atlantic Championships in Moncton, N.B.

Summerside and Kentville both enjoyed early success at the tournament, winning their opening games to put themselves atop their respective pools.

Summerside, the representatives of Baseball PEI, began the tournament defeating Dartmouth by a large score of 14-7. Cody McCormack led the charge with three RBI to secure the victory.

They proved the first 15 runs were no fluke in their second game of the tournament, when they beat the other undefeated team Fredericton by a convincing 7-2 score. Only two hits were allowed by Owen Lynch in his five-inning gem on the mound where he also struck out nine batters.

Kentville’s start featured an early victory over Mid-Isle, before the Nova Scotia squad rolled over St. John’s in the second game of their day.

The victory against Mid-Isle came by a final of 5-3, where all five of Kentville’s runs were scored in the top half of the third inning. It began with an RBI knock from Ryan Avery – he doubled home the first two runs of the game to open the floodgates.

They wouldn’t look back and had a similar offensive output in game two against the Newfoundland representative from St. John’s.

Moncton impressed the home crowd with back-to-back wins to open their tournament as well. They beat St. John’s 8-3 in the first game for the hosts, and then handed Mid-Isle their second loss of the day later in the evening.
