Baseball Canada Championships: Day 1 wraps up with close scores nationwide

OTTAWA -- It’s the time of year everyone has been waiting for. National championship season in upon us, with the nation’s best on display at tournaments around the country.

Action began early in the day. Take a look at results, standings, and more below.

18U Championship

London plays host to the 18U championship, where the Badgers opened up the tournament as the hosts on a good note. London (ON2) bested Sasktachewan 2-1 on their home field of Labatt Park in one of the tournament’s opening morning games.

Tyler D’Alessandro had both London RBI in the victory. Both scored on a triple by D’Alessandro in the bottom of the sixth, giving London a response after Saskatchewan notched the first run of the game in the top half of that inning.

In the first game of the tournament, Newfoundland and Labrador walked off Nova Scotia on a play off the bat of Joel Abbott in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Diego Lopez and giving his team a 6-5 win in the opening game of their championship.

13U Western Championship

Both Abbotsford (BC) and Camros (AB1) began their tournaments with wins by convincing scores. Camrose beat North Winnipeg (MB1) 15-1, while Abbotsford handed Regina their first loss of the tournament 16-3.

Elsewhere, the hosts from Parkland had a good start to the championship, posting a  nail-biting game in the win column by beating Carillon 6-4.

16U Girls Championship

Ontario kicked off the tournament with a 6-4 win over Nova Scotia, in a tight contest to open up the lone girls championship of the weekend. Miya Waldron came in clutch for the Ontarians, registering three RBI to kick off the tournament. That would be the difference.

The second game in Vaughan led to a much higher scoring finish. Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador scored a combined 32 runs, with Prince Edward Island taking their tournament opener 22-10.

Quebec 5, British Columbia 2

21U Championship

The hosts from Quebec opened things up with a good day, downing St. Thomas (ON2) 11-1 in the opening game of the tournament at Parc Sanscartier in Gatineau. A wide array of scoring led to the victory. Francis Desilets, Mathieu Sirois, Joey Toupin with three RBI each, in a game that welcomed Quebec to the 21U championship as a contender.

Quebec would later play against Saskatchewan, defeating them 7-2. It was a much more balanced offensive effort from Quebec this time around, with Anthony Quirion as the only player to notch two RBI in the game.

Elsewhere in the tournament, PEI put up an impressive 22 runs in their victory over Nova Scotia to open the tournament at RCGT Park in Ottawa. Windsor (ON1) also made their presence felt with a convincing victory over Manitoba, 13-0.
