Baseball Canada Cup: Semi-final match-ups set

OTTAWA- Round-robin action concluded today at the Baseball Canada Cup in Saskatoon and the quarter final game was played with Québec earning a 9-1 win over PEI to advance to one of two semi-final games that will be played tomorrow.

Host Saskatchewan will put their unbeaten record on the line in the first semi-final when they take-on BC, while Alberta will meet Québec in the second game.

Tomorrow’s gold medal final is scheduled to take place at 9:30pm ET and can be seen live on baseball.ca.

Here’s a look at all of the action from earlier today:

QF – Québec 9 PEI 1

Québec didn’t let a one-sided loss to Alberta affect them as they easily defeated PEI 9-1 to earn a re-match with Alberta tomorrow in the semis. Mathieu Deneault-Gauthier (Candiac, QC) pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, scattering five hits and one walk. Leading 3-1 after three and a half innings, Québec put the game out of reach scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth and added another two in the sixth. Luca Portolese (St-Leonard, QC) and Samuel Chaput (Boisbriand, QC) each drove in a pair of run, while Jonathan Martin (L’Assomption, QC) went 3-for-3 with three doubles and one RBI. Issac Deveaux (Montréal, QC) went 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI.

Manitoba 14 Newfoundland and Labrador 4 (5 innings)

Manitoba made quick work of Newfoundland and Labrador scoring runs in all five of their offensive innings to come away with a 14-4 mercy-rule victory. Newfoundland and Labrador led 3-0 after the top of the first, but Christian Peters (Winnipeg, MB) led-off the bottom of the inning with a homerun that allowed his team to later tie the score after the first and take the lead with a five-run second. Marshal Burgess (Brandon, MB) and Brett Harrison (Winnipeg, MB) each drove in a pair of runs, while teammate Liam Giesbrecht (Winkler, MB) went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Chase Dreger (Oak Bluff, MB) pitched all five innings on the mound to record the win.

PEI 1 Nova Scotia 0

Parker Harvey’s (Freetown, PE) pinch-hit single with two out in the top of the seventh scored Darcy Affleck (Stratford, PE) from third base with the games only run as PEI edged Nova Scotia in a pitcher’s duel. Kyle Pinksen (Kensington, PE) pitched a complete game shutout that saw him give up six hits and just one walk to go along with four strikeouts. Nova Scotia’s Jake Lonar (Coldbrook, NS) was tagged with the loss even though he went seven innings and allowed just four hits and no walks, while fanning ten.

Ontario 14 BC 4

Ontario did all they could to try and save their playoff lives defeating BC 14-4 in a mercy-rule game, but with Québec’s win over Alberta that were eliminated from medal contention. Richard Freure (Burlington, ON) pitched five innings for Ontario and struck out three to record the win, while Tristan Pompey (Mississauga, ON) and Connor May (Oshawa, ON) each drove in three runs. Ontario blew the game wide open with nine runs in the fourth and pounded out 14 hits on offence. Four players had multi-hit games including Andrew Yerzy (North York, ON) and Zach Fascia (Brampton, ON) who had three apiece to go along with two RBI each. BC’s Lucas Soper (Vancouver, BC) went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Saskatchewan 9 New Brunswick 8

Saskatchewan kept their unbeaten streak intact by coming from behind with five runs in the seventh to overcome a four-run deficit and defeat New Brunswick 9-8. After Danny Berg’s (Saskatoon, SK) single tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, Robbie Wilkes (Regina, SK) scored the winning run on a wild pitch. With Saskatchewan leading 4-2 after six, New Brunswick exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh only to see Saskatchewan come back with five in the bottom to win. Kyle Jewell (Salisbury, NB) had four RBI for New Brunswick, while teammate Brett Brittany (McLeod Hill, NB) went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Eric Clauson (Saskatoon, SK) went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, while Jordan Malainey (Saskatoon, SK) went 3-for-3 with one RBI.

Alberta 9 Québec 2

Jared Kennedy (Calgary, AB) and Jordan Parranto (Sherwood Park, AB) combined to limit Québec to just two runs and five hits as Alberta clinched second spot in Pool A and a spot in the semi-finals with a 9-2 win. Kennedy started and went four innings recording five strikeouts, while Parranto tossed three scoreless innings and added three strikeouts to his line. Sean Robbins (Edmonton, AB) went 3-for-5 with one RBI, while teammate Nick Vickers (Calgary, AB) drove in two runs. Québec’s Cedrick Pellerin (Val D’Or, QC) had a pair of doubles in the loss.

Up Next: Tournament play continues tomorrow with seven games scheduled beginning at 11am ET…The first semi-final will begin at Noon ET with the second to follow at 3pm ET…The bronze medal match-up will commence at 6:30pm ET with the gold medal final to follow at 9:30pm ET…Three placement games will also take place tomorrow.
