Baseball Canada Fall Convention heads to Halifax October 24-27

OTTAWA-The annual Baseball Canada Fall Convention is scheduled to take place at the Four Points by Sheraton in Halifax October 24-27 where local, provincial and national baseball representatives will meet to discuss the growth and development of amateur baseball in Canada.

Executive Director’s from all 10 Baseball Canada member provinces, the national governing body’s Board of Directors and staff along with the Executive Committee will be in attendance.

The four-day event will see several workshops, presentations and information sessions that will address topics such as:

•             Developing a Strategic Plan for 2014-18

•             An update from the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Academy

•             Women’s National Team High Performance 4 year plan

•             Branding the Challenger Baseball Program

•             Reviewing/amending/adopting National Championship rules

Although these workshops are closed to the public, four sessions will be open to the public that include:

Grass Roots Development (Saturday, Oct. 26th - 9:00 AM - 10:45 PM)

The grass roots development presentation is based on the lessons learned from the Moneyball Movie and how these concepts are at the basis of all programs development at Baseball Canada. From Rally Cap, Grand Slam and My First Pitch to RBI, Pitch count and The Lab, this presentation will highlight each of these initiatives and how they have became important components of baseball development across the country. This presentation will highlight program design, implementation and communication so local associations can take advantage of these programs.

High Performance Coaching Seminar (Saturday, Oct. 26th - 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM)

This session is to provide High Performance coaches an opportunity to meet and listen to Greg Hamilton, Head Coach and Director, Baseball Canada National Teams.  During this workshop coaches will have the opportunity to understand how they can help develop young players who have the potential to be a successful candidate for the National Teams program.

Challenger Baseball - How to get started in your community (Saturday, Oct. 26th - 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM)

Challenger Baseball is a program that provides an opportunity for children with cognitive or physical disabilities to enjoy the full benefits of participation in baseball at a level structured to their abilities. This workshop is for those interested in learning about Challenger Baseball and to find volunteers who are interested in starting a program in their community. 

Umpire Advancement (Saturday, Oct. 26th - 2:45 PM - 4:00 PM)

This workshop is geared towards any umpire interested in officiating at a national championship.  This session will focus on how to work on development so one can be considered for a future national assignment.

Women’s National Team player, Niki Boyd along with Nova Scotia Bantam Girls Provincial Team Coaches will host a FREE baseball camp for girls aged 11-16. The camp will take place on Saturday, October 26th from 2-4pm at Soccer Nova Scotia Training Facility in Halifax, 210 Thomas Raddall Dr.

The Baseball Canada Fall Convention will conclude with an awards ceremony at 7pm AST on Saturday, October 26th at Murphy’s on the Water, 1751 Lower Water Street in Halifax. Award presentations will be made for the Women’s National Team MVP, Baseball Canada and Major League Baseball Volunteer of the Year, Dick Willis Umpire of the Year, Lionel Ruhr Coach of the Year and the Province of the Year. At the same time, Baseball Nova Scotia will be handing out their annual awards. Tickets are available for $60 and can be purchased though Holly Lapierre (holly.lapierre@bellaliant.ca) until Tuesday, October 22nd. Group rates are available!
