Canada Dropped by USA

Maracay, Venezuela- The Women’s National Team left runners on base in five different innings and were beaten soundly by a score of 10-1 against Team USA. The game was the first of three games in Round 2 at the Women’s World Cup. With the way the tournament in structured your record versus teams that also advanced to Round 2, count towards your overall record. This means that Canada currently has a record of 1 win and 2 losses in Round 2.

USA jumped on WNT starter Cindy Saavadra (Toronto, ON) in the top of the 1st inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. Saavadra was replaced during the inning by Melissa Armstarong (Saskatonn, SK) who had a solid outing by pitching 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, giving up 1 walk and striking out 3.

Canada got on the board in the 4th inning when Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) who had previously singled, scored on a sacrifice fly from Stéphanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) to make the score 5-1. Psota’s single was one of 6 hits the Canadians had on the afternoon.

Team USA went on to score 4 more runs in the 6th and add another in the 7th to put the game out of reach for the Canadians.

Next up, Canada will face Japan at 3:30pm ET on August 19th. With two games remaining each game now takes on a ‘must-win’ meaning in hopes of advancing to the medal round.
