Maracay, Venezuela- The Women’s National Team left runners on base in five different innings and were beaten soundly by a score of 10-1 against Team USA. The game was the first of three games in Round 2 at the Women’s World Cup. USA jumped on WNT starter Cindy Saavadra (Toronto, ON) in the top of the 1st inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. Saavadra was replaced during the inning by Melissa Armstarong (Saskatonn, SK) who had a solid outing by pitching 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, giving up 1 walk and striking out 3.
Canada got on the board in the 4th inning when Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) who had previously singled, scored on a sacrifice fly from Stéphanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) to make the score 5-1. Psota’s single was one of 6 hits the Canadians had on the afternoon.
Team USA went on to score 4 more runs in the 6th and add another in the 7th to put the game out of reach for the Canadians.
