Fall Instructional League: Inter-squad notes

OTTAWA-Rain forced the cancellation of today’s scheduled game between the Junior National Team and the Washington Nationals prospects. The junior’s still managed to get an inter-squad game in once the rain subsided.

The six-inning game saw five different pitchers throw and three different hitter’s record multi-hit games.

The home side, led by Lucas Zilli’s (Mississauga, ON) 2-for-2 day at the plate, defeated the visitors, 5-3.

-Three consecutive, two-out singles coming from Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON), Charles Leblanc (Laval, QC) and Jonathan Martin (Montréal, QC) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

-They made it 2-0 in the second when Mitch Robinson (Surrey, BC) scored on a double-play after he singled and moved to third on an error.

-Mitch Bigras (Sarnia, ON) got the home team on the board in the bottom of the second when he doubled, moved to third on a balk and scored on a double-steal. After a pair of walks, Lucas Zilli came up with an RBI single and LP Pelletier (Montréal, QC) came into count after a sac-fly to give the home side a 3-2 lead.

-Ian Wilson (Toronto, ON) smacked a triple in the bottom of the third and ended up scoring on the play after an error in left field which put the home team up by two.

-The visitors got one of the runs back in the sixth as Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) doubled and later scored on an error.

-Robert Byckowski (Etobicoke, ON) doubled and eventually came around to score on a sac-fly from LP Pelletier in the sixth to make the score 5-3.

-Kurtis Horne (Sooke, BC) and Keenan Williams (Vancouver, BC) each threw for the home club with Horne going 3 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and giving up two runs with one strikeout, while Williams went two innings and gave up one hit and one run (unearned), and struck out one batter.

-Isaac Anesty (Guelph, ON) tossed four innings for the visitors and allowed four runs on five hits and three walks. He fanned one batter. JP Stevenson (Hunter River, PEI) and Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, AB) each threw one inning of relief. Stevenson had two strikeouts.

-Josh Naylor and Royce Ando (Mississauga, ON) had two hits apiece for the visitors.

Notes: The juniors will face the Atlanta Braves tomorrow at Champion Stadium on the grounds of ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando for a 1pm ET first pitch…Colton Wood (Victoria, BC) is expected to start.
