Fall Instructional League: Juniors fall to Braves in fall finale

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida – The Junior National Team was held to just two hits, while the Atlanta Braves prospects smacked out ten hits en rote to an 8-1 win. The loss wraps up the annual Fall Instructional League Camp for the Junior National Team program and marks the beginning of the off-season with Spring Training in St. Petersburg, Florida scheduled for the end of March.

Starting Pitcher: RHP Eric Cerantola

HOW IT HAPPENED

-A lead off walk in the bottom of the first followed by a stolen base and a passed ball put a runner on third for the Braves who used a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the ballgame that came off JNT starter Eric Cerantola (Oakville, ON)

-The Braves used three hits in the third, starting with a one out double with a triple and single to follow, to score tow more runs and jump out to a 3-0 lead.

-Three Braves runs in the fifth off reliever Harley Gollert (Toronto, ON) broke the game open as they led by six. A single and double made it 4-0 before a base hit, passed ball and two errors led to two more runs crossing the plate.

-The juniors ended the shutout bid with a run in the seventh as Clayton Keyes (Calgary, AB) singled, stole second and scored on a Braves error.

-With reliever Sam Shoemaker (Lions Bay, BC) on the mound, the Braves used two hits, an error and sac fly to plate two runs and round out the scoring.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Reliever Harley Gollert was tagged for two earned runs over three innings of work but did manage to strikeout four batters.

-The juniors could only muster two hits on offence with Keyes and Lucas Parente (Burlington, ON) each collecting singles.

UP NEXT

Players, coaches and staff will return home tomorrow…The next event for the Junior National Team program is scheduled for March 24th to April 1st in St. Petersburg, Florida…The camp will be the first of four camps that will help determine the 20-player roster that will represent Canada at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Thunder Bay, Ontario from September 1st to 11th, 2017.
