First day complete at bantam events

OTTAWA – Day 1 rapped up with some pretty exciting action in both events.  Teams are starting to show what they are made of heading into the second day of round robin play and will to further position themselves for a better spot in the standings heading into the medal rounds. 

 

Bantam Boys Championship

PEI 4  Alberta 3

Brett Arsenault (Miscouche, PE) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift his team to the tight victory over Alberta.  Offensively, Porter Smith (North River, PE) stood out with three hits in three at bats while Alberta pitcher Austin Ely (Calgary, AB) took the loss despite pitching the entire game striking out seven. 

BC 13  Newfoundland and Labrador 3

Trailing 3-0 heading into the fourth inning, BC’s bats went to work by driving in a whopping 13 runs in the final three innings to roll over Newfoundland and Labrador.  Thomas Espig (Vancouver, BC) contributed in a big way with a home run and game high five RBI. 

Vaughan 12  Saskatchewan 7

Vaughan scored at least one run in every inning and shut down Saskatchewan when they needed to leading to the victory.  Centre fielder Demi Oromiloye (Orleans, ON) went a perfect 3/3 at the plate, which included two home runs, and racked up five RBI.  Tyler Dobie (Toronto, ON) picked up the win by going four innings and striking out nine batters.  Kobe Walker (Lloydminster, SK) had two hits and two RBI for his team. 

Québec 16  New Brunswick 1

Québec needed only four innings to quickly dismantle New Brunswick in this mercy-shortened game.  Cédryk Edmond (Montréal, QC) had two hits and five RBI to settle the tone offensively while Sam Cameron (Fredericton, NB) chipped in with two hits for his squad. 

Ontario 13  Manitoba 0

Ontario scored early and often to defeat Manitoba via the mercy rule.  Austin Ferguson (Brampton, ON) was a stud offensively with three hits, five RBI and three runs scored.  Ontario pitchers combined to give up only one hit. 

BC 14  PEI 4

BC’s bats once again came out swinging, this time to the tune of 14 runs, including ten of them in the fourth inning to defeat PEI.  Six different players had at least one RBI while three players had at least three RBI.  Pitcher Taylor Wright (North Vancouver, BC, picked up the win over five solid innings and struck out six batters. 

 

Bantam Girls Championship

Manitoba 7  Newfoundland and Labrador 6

Manitoba squeaked out a late inning victory after coughing up the lead only an inning before.  Leah Lagoski (Gilbert Plains, MB) stood out offensively for her squad with two hits and two RBI while Heather Healey (Conception Bay South, NL) had two hits and three RBI in her team’s losing effort. 

Québec 9  Nova Scotia 5

Trailing for most of the game, Québec exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to steal the win away from Nova Scotia.  Isabella Denis (Candiac, QC) and Molly Leclair (Repentigny, QC) had two RBI each in the win while Daphnee Gelinas (Le Gardeur, QC) struck out four over two innings to pick up the win.  Jenna Jackson (Steam Mill, NS) had two hits and three RBI for her team.
