Junior National Team inter-squad notes

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida – After opening the extended spring training camp with an 8-2 loss to a group of Atlanta Braves pro prospects yesterday, the Junior National Team split into two sides today for an inter-squad game with coach Shawn Bowman’s club earning a 7-5 win over coach Adam Stern’s team.

The game featured plenty of offence as both squads combined for 17 hits and 12 runs.

Here are some highlights from the game:

-Nobody had a bigger game offensively than outfielder Miles Gordon (Oakville, ON) who went 5-for-7 and scored two runs while adding an RBI and stolen base for good measure
-Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON) was the only other player to record a multi-hit game as he went 3-for-6 with a double and scored three runs. Naylor also added a stolen base and one RBI to his stat line
-Although he didn’t record a hit, catcher Andrew Yerzy (Toronto, ON) drove in two runs with an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly
-Tristan Pompey (Milton, ON), Darren Shred (Brampton, ON), JF Garon (Terrebonne, QC) and Isaac Deveaux (Montréal, QC) each collected a base hit and one RBI
-On the mound, right-hander Matt Ianni (Ottawa, ON) started for Team Bowman and tossed three shutout innings, scattering four hits and a walk to go along with one strikeout
-Jackson Wark (St. Albert, AB) also had a strong outing fanning four through three scoreless frames where he only allowed one walk
-LHP Nick Vickers (Calgary, AB) and RHP Sam Turcotte (Toronto, ON) both got their first taste of action as members of the Junior National Team program with each throwing three innings. Both pitchers were touched up for two earned runs, although they each recorded a game-high four strikeouts
-Left-handers Matt Jones (Whitby, ON) and Vincent Beauregard (Laval, QC) tossed three innings apiece for their respective clubs and recorded one strikeout.
