Lennerton headed to Futures Game

OTTAWA- Detroit Tigers prospect Jordan Lennerton (Langley, BC) will represent Canada on the World Team at next month’s Futures Game at Citi Field in New York.

Lennerton, the lone Canadian selected to the World Team, is enjoying a fine season with Triple-A Toledo where he has clubbed 12 home runs and driven in 38, while hitting .313 through 79 games.

The Futures game is slated for Sunday, July 14th, as part of All-Star weekend in New York, and features some of the top prospects in baseball in a Team World vs. Team USA format.

Fans in Canada can watch the game live on MLB.com beginning at 2pm ET.

Since 1999 the likes of Jose Bautista, Bryce Harper and Miguel Cabrera have competed in the Futures Game that has seen 99 graduates go on to compete in the MLB All-Star Game.

Current Canadian major league players Phillippe Aumont (Phillies), Erik Bedard (Astros), George Kottaras (Royals), Brett Lawrie (Blue Jays), Russell Martin (Pirates), Justin Morneau (Twins), Michael Saunders (Mariners) and Joey Votto (Reds) are former participants in the Futures Game.

Lennerton is a graduate of the Junior National Team program and recently represented Canada at the 2012 World Baseball Classic Qualifier where he homered against host Germany to help Canada qualify for the World Baseball Classic.

Prior to being selected by the Tigers in the 2008 MLB Draft, Lennerton was a star slugger for Oregon State University where he was a member of their 2007 College World Series championship team.
