National Championships: No-hitter highlights early action

OTTAWA- At the 18U National Championship in Magog, Graham Bailey (Surrey) and Liam Campbell (Chilliwack) of BC combined on a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over Newfoundland and Labrador as action kicked-off today at four different National Championships.

Here is a recap of the early games with a complete day one round up including the 13U National Western Championship coming later today:

21U

Manitoba 5 Ontario (2) 4

Matt Smith’s (Winnipeg, MB) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth scored Colten Carlow (Winnipeg) with the go ahead run as Manitoba held on for a 5-4 win over Ontario (2). Manitoba starter Tyler Moskalyk (Winnipeg) went the distance to get the win, while teammate Jesse Mutcheson (Morden) went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Ontario’s Stephen Fried (Brampton) hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

Ontario 6 PEI 0

Connor Mailloux (Windsor, ON) tossed a complete-game two hitter and struck out nine to lead Ontario to a 6-0 win over PEI. Matt Sykes (Amherstburg) and Andrew Wasyluk (Windsor) each contributed a pair of his and drove-in one run each for Ontario.

New Brunswick 8 BC 2

Shawn Reid (Fredericton) pitched a complete-game allowing two runs, scattered seven hits and struck out five to lead New Brunswick to an 8-2 win over BC. Adam Clarke (Saint John) smacked a pair of doubled and drove in three runs, while Tanner Banks (Fredericton) scored three runs and added a pair of singles. BC’s Riley MacDonald (North Vancouver) collected two hits and scored two runs in the loss.

Saskatchewan 4 PEI 3

Saskatchewan scored two runs in the top of the seventh to come from behind and earn a 4-3 victory over PEI. Both runs scored on an error with two out and the bases loaded. Pat Kelley (Regina) went all seven innings on the mound for Saskatchewan and fanned seven to get the win, while Jordan Dezotell (Regina) had two hits and scored two runs. PEI’s Brady Arsenault (Summerside) fanned eight over six innings of work.

18U

Manitoba 8 PEI 6

After being down 6-1 after three innings, Manitoba completed the comeback with four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to defeat PEI 8-6. Adam Robidoux (Binscarth) drove in a pair of runs and scored two, while Riley Shamray (Oak River) went 1-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored. Dominique Ryan (Charlottetown) doubled and drove in two runs for PEI.

Nova Scotia 2 New Brunswick 1

Luke Muise (Yarmouth) and Ryan McPhee (Kennetcook) combined to limit New Brunswick to just one run and six hits as Nova Scotia hung on for a 2-1 win. Colan Mcculloch (Kennetcook) scored a run, drove in a run and had two hits, while New Brunswick received a pair of hits from Blake Gallagher (Waasis).

Québec 14 Ontario 1

Québec’s Ismael Ballard (Trois-Rivières) went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI to lead his team to 14-1 win over Ontario. JF Garon (Terrebonne) had a pair of doubles as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored. Vincent Beauregard (Laval), Joey Toupin (Trois-Rivières) and Zachary Gignac (Gatineau) combined to limit Ontario to just three hits.

Québec (2) 10 Saskatchewan 4

Host, Québec (2), overcame a 3-1 deficit in a big way scoring three runs in the five and five in the sixth before adding one run in the seventh to defeat Saskatchewan 10-4. Jacob Dugal (Montréal) drove in four runs as part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while John-Anthony Lantigua (Boischatel) added a solo home run.

Manitoba 7 Nova Scotia 3

Brody Smith (Hamiota) tossed a complete game and struck out five as Manitoba picked-up their second win of the day with a 7-3 victory over Nova Scotia. Smith received offensive support from Marshal Burgess (Brandon) who doubled and drove in two runs as part of a 3-for-4 game at the plate. Logan Dowe (Amherst) doubled and drove in a pair for Nova Scotia.

Senior Women

Alberta 14 BC (2) 2

Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton) went 3-for-4 with a double and scored three runs as Alberta ran away with a 14-2 victory over BC (2). Shortstop Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) had a huge game at the plate driving in five runs with a double and a single, while Heidi Northcott (Rocky Mountain House) tossed one scoreless inning and drove in two runs.
