National Championships: Abbotsford Continues to Roll

OTTAWA- Sheldon Poirier (Abbotsford, BC) had an incredible day at the plate, belting 2 homeruns as Abbotsford cruised to an 11-1 win over Winnipeg South at the Peewee Western championship in Brandon, MB. Poirier’s first blast was a 3 run job in the 1st inning followed by a 2 run shot in the 2nd inning. The game was shortened to 5 innings because of the 10 run mercy rule. Luxton Glor (Winnipeg, MB) was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Winnipeg South offensively.

Maracay, Venezuela- The Women’s National Team lost their second straight contest of Round 2 at the Women’s World Cup by a score of 6-2 to Japan. The WNT now faces a must win game against Cuba if they hope to advance to the medal round.

OTTAWA: Dany Deschamps (Montréal, QC) had 2 hits and 2 RBI as Québec shut out Nova Scotia 8-0 at the Junior championship in Trois-Riviéres. Québec scored all 8 of their runs in the 2nd inning which saw a Deschamps double account for 2 of them.

OTTAWA- Championship season is about to kick in to high gear as three National Championship tournaments will commence this week. On August 19th the National Peewee Western event will begin in Brandon, Manitoba as well as the Midget Championship taking place in London, Ontario and the Junior Championship in Trois-Riviéres, Québec.

OTTAWA- Baseball Canada has selected 24 players from the 2010 Baseball Canada Cup in Kindersley, Saskatchewan who will be attending the Junior National Team Fall Instructional League camp in Orlando, Florida this coming October.

Maracay, Venezuela- The Women’s National Team left runners on base in five different innings and were beaten soundly by a score of 10-1 against Team USA. The game was the first of three games in Round 2 at the Women’s World Cup. With the way the tournament in structured your record versus teams that also advanced to Round 2, count towards your overall record. This means that Canada currently has a record of 1 win and 2 losses in Round 2.

OTTAWA- This past June’s First Year Player Draft saw 31 Canadians selected to various Major League Baseball clubs. August 16th was the last day for MLB clubs to sign any of the players that they drafted. The following is a list of the 19 players that did sign. Maracay, Venezuela- After tying the game in the top of the 7th inning, the Women’s National Team lost their first game of the Women’s World Cup in 8 innings by a score of 3-2 to Venezuela. The winning run was scored in the extra frame when a base-hit was made to left field scoring a runner from 3rd base. International extra-innings rules are structured so that a team places runners on 1st and 2nd base and chooses which batter they would like to send to the plate. Venezuela used a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to 2nd and 3rd and received a base-hit to left field by the next batter to win the game.

Maracay, Venezuela-The Women’s National Team resumed play at the IV Women’s World Cup of Baseball in Maracay, Venezuela Monday morning with a solid effort and convincing win over The Netherlands by a score of 12-1 in five innings.
