Girls Clinic in Nova Scotia a hit!

OTTAWA-Nova Scotia has once again hosted a successful girl’s instructional clinic. For the third year in a row a clinic has been provided to teach baseball skills and also increase the profile of the sport amongst females in the province. This year the event was held in Bedford, a small community that is just outside of Halifax where over 150 girls participated.

OTTAWA- Three Gold Medal winners were determined at National Championships today in Dartmouth (Nova Scotia), Vaughan (Ontario) and Richmond (BC).

OTTAWA- BC staked their claim as a contender at the Bantam Girl’s championship in Richmond, BC as they sailed to a 13-3 victory over Nova Scotia. In the 1st inning BC got out to an early 3-0 lead when Avery Hutton (North Vancouver, BC) scored on a wild-pitch which was followed by RBI singles from Maryse Garcia (Surrey, BC) and Hailee Renkers (Surrey, BC). BC would add to their lead in both the 2nd and 3rd innings by scoring four runs in each frame. On the mound Lexie Brennis (Delta, BC) tossed three no-hit innings and struck out six to earn the victory. Nova Scotia got on the board in the 5th with two runs and scored another in the 6th on an RBI single from Jenna-Marie Burns (Sackville, NS). BC put two more runs across in the top of the 7th and Tamara Derby (Coquitlam, BC0 pitched a scoreless 7th inning to secure the win.

OTTAWA- Kevin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) led the offensive charge as BC doubled up on Red Deer (Alberta-2) 8-4 at the Senior Men’s championship in Dartmouth, NS. Atkinson belted a three-run homer in the 5th inning to put his team up 5-0, which turned out to be all of the runs they would need. Earlier in the game Cody Valgardson (Kelowna, BC) gave his team a 1-0 lead as he hit a solo homerun to open the scoring. The offensive onslaught continued in the 5th when Cory Stang (Surrey, BC) hit a three run shot of his own and the rout was on. Red Deer fought back in the bottom of the 5th when Jason Chatwood (Red Deer, AB) would contribute a two-run homerun which was followed by two more Red Deer runs. In the end the deficit was too much for Red Deer to overcome as BC hung on for the win. Tim Fehr (North Delta, BC) earned the victory on the mound as he went the distance and struck out three.

OTTAWA- Vaughan got things going at the Bantam Boys championship in their own backyard by pounding Alberta 10-2 in the tournaments opening game. The host club smashed out fourteen hits, two of which came from Darien Dalton (Newmarket, ON) who scored two runs and also recorded two RBI. With Vaughan holding a 3-0 lead in the 5th inning they completely took control of the game by scoring five runs. Alexander Paglia (Woodbridge, ON) would start things off by hitting a bases loaded single that would score two runs. Paglia and Tyler Nakamura (Concord, ON) would later score on a Dalton triple and he scored on a Ryan Grant (Mississauga, ON) single. Shayne Rajadurai (Oak Ridge, ON) and Junya Ashima (Richmond Hill, ON) combined to limit Alberta to three hits and struck out seven batters. Layne Currie (Calgary, AB) had two hits for Alberta in a losing cause.

OTTAWA- BC only gave up one hit and ended up beating Saskatchewan 12-1 in a mercy shortened game at the Bantam Girls championship in Richmond, BC. In the 2nd inning Avery Hutton (North Vancouver, BC) highlighted an eleven run outburst when she singled to bring home two runs. Sheridan Takahara (Maple Ridge, BC) also had a two run single in the inning. On the mound, Maryse Garcia (Surrey, BC) was dominant in picking up the win, allowing only one hit and striking out six.

OTTAWA- Yet another three National Championships will take place this week as championship season is fully upon us. The Bantam Girls championship will take place in Richmond, BC and will see an 7 team field participate, which is an increase of 1 team from 2009. In Vaughan, Ontario the Bantam Boys championship will be busy as all provinces will be represented as well as the host Vaughn club. Finally, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia the Senior Men’s championship will return for a second straight year and will feature a 10 team field that includes the defending champs from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

Lennerton Named FSL Player of the Week

OTTAWA-Jordan Lennerton (Langley, BC) has been named the Florida State League’s player of the week (week ending August 22nd). Lennerton, a first baseman, is currently playing for the Detroit Tigers High-A affiliate in Lakeland, Florida. The 2004 Junior National Team member had quite a week at the plate hitting .406 (13-for-32) with 5 homeruns and 9 RBI. Lennerton’s week included hitting homerun’s in three straight games and after homering again on August 19th, he recorded an RBI for the 9th straight game. Lennerton has been on fire since being promoted to Lakeland from West Michigan in the Mid-West League, as he has hit .325 with 9 homeruns and 30 RBI and has hit .393 during the month of August.
