Provincial Preview: PEI

OTTAWA- Baseball PEI has recently gone through a major change at the top of its provincial office. Fresh off a seven year stint with Sport PEI as its Multi-Sport Executive Director is Glenn Flood, who is anxious to get familiar in his new post as Executive Director of Baseball PEI.

“I want to get caught up in the sport, and make myself aware of who is who in each community and find out what programs are being run,” said Flood in his first week on the job.

At this point of the season programs such as Rally Cap are well underway, and Flood sees progress being made already in the development of the program in the province.

“There will be more of a push to extend the Rally Cap from just the skills into games within the associations that are close geographically,” explained Flood.

Flood anticipates that this will help garner further interest in the program and allow the coaches to see that the skills being taught are put to use in game situations.

“This is very exciting for the Rally Cap division as it will give the kids a chance to mirror the other divisions of baseball,” continued Flood.

The Winterball program is still a work in progress in PEI, as word is still getting out about the merits of the program. The final numbers for participation in the program for this past winter are still being tabulated. Once the numbers are in, Flood will be able to make his impressions of the program and find out how to implement Winterball into more schools.

“It appears that a lot of interest was there (for the Winterball program), I’m hoping to review the information in the coming weeks,” noted Flood.

The high performance teams in PEI are well underway lead by Technical Director Desi Doyle. Flood is in the process of meeting with Doyle in order to get caught up on the progress and expectations of those teams.

“I’ve already met with Desi and preparations are well underway for getting those teams ready for the high performance competitions,” said Flood. “Desi is a hard working, dedicated and committed individual which can only run a lot of benefit to those teams.”

As busy as Flood will be with getting his feet wet at his new post he has some expectations of himself that will help him get accustomed to his new surroundings.

“From a personal level it’s simply getting caught up in the sport,” explained Flood. “There are some things that the executive would like me to get my head around in terms of meeting timelines, ensuring that registration forms are completed amongst other office duties. By season’s end I want to have a really good grasp of what’s going on.”

Keeping the challenges in mind, Flood notes that he has some people to lean on while he gets comfortable learning the ins and outs of baseball in PEI, this support system will allow him to learn quickly on the job.

“There seems to be really good leadership at the executive level to be able to fall back on.”
