Quantrill Named Baseball America Third-Team All-American

OTTAWA-Baseball America released their annual college preseason All-American teams today and Junior National Team alumni Cal Quantrill was named to the third team. The Stanford University right-hander was also named to the Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America Third Team and the Perfect Game Preseason All-America Second Team earlier this year.

The Port Hope, ON native is heading into his sophomore season with the Cardinal after an impressive freshman campaign that saw him capture Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honours, while also being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and Perfect Game Freshman All-American.

Last February, he became the first Stanford freshman to earn the opening day start since Mike Mussina in 1988 before compiling a 7-5 record with a 2.68 ERA in 17 starts on the mound.

Other highlights from his freshman season include a complete-game victory over Indiana State on May 30th, 2014 in the regionals before turning in 2.1 innings in relief in a 5-4, regional clinching victory over Indiana two days later. Quantrill earned a no-decision tossing seven innings and giving up two earned runs in a loss to eventual College World Series champion Vanderbilt in the Super Regionals.

Last summer, he started four games with Morehead City Marlins in the Coastal Plain League winning three of those starts that saw him strikeout 33 batters in 22.2 innings pitched, while holding a tidy 1.59 ERA. Baseball America later named him the leagues top prospect.

The soon to be 20 year-old (February 10th) played on the Junior National Team from 2011 to 2013 helping Canada to silver medals at the 2011 COPABE 18U World Cup Qualifier and 2012 IBAF 18U World Cup.

Quantrill and the Cardinal begin their 2015 season on February 13th when they play host to Indiana.
