Senior Women Invitational begins Thursday

OTTAWA- Baseball Canada’s National Championship season officially kicks-off this week with the Senior Women Invitational set to begin Thursday, July 11th and run through until Sunday, July 14th in Granby, QC.

The five team tournament features two entries from Québec, while Ontario, Alberta and BC will also be represented.

A round-robin will be followed by two semi-final games on Saturday, July 13th with bronze and gold medal games slated for the following day.

The tournament will provide Canada’s Women’s National Team Manager, André Lachance, along with his coaching staff, the opportunity to evaluate players prior to the Canada-Japan Women’s Series taking place in Granby from July 15th-21st.

“The Senior Women’s Invitational should be a great event with five strong teams competing this year,” said Lachance. “We’re excited to see all of the great current and up-and-coming talent that Canada has to offer.”

Ontario comes into the event as the defending gold medalists from 2012 after they defeated BC 11-0 in the deciding game.

Alberta took the bronze at the 2012 event, hosted in their backyard, in Spruce Grove, as they defeated Québec 7-1 in the bronze medal game.

Following the gold medal game, Lachance and his staff will select players and form two teams that will compete against two touring Japanese teams at the Canada-Japan Women’s Series.

The National Team has their sights set on the 2014 IBAF Women’s World Cup and the 2015 Pan Am Games where women’s baseball will be a medal sport for the first time.
