HOW IT HAPPENED
-The juniors opened the scoring in the top of the second as Darren Shred (Brampton, ON) singled with two out before Peter Hutzal (Calgary, AB) reached on an error. Royce Ando (Mississauga, ON) followed with a triple that scored both runners.
-The Braves answered back with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth off reliever Isaac Anesty (Guelph, ON). After a leadoff single, a walk with one out gave the Braves two base runners with both eventually came around to score on a RBI single followed by an error.
-Poor defensive play came back to haunt the juniors in the fifth as a Braves run scored with two-out in the frame thanks two errors and a wild pitch. Anesty worked two innings and gave up three runs, although only one was earned. He managed one strikeout.
-Josh Burgmann (Nanaimo, BC) took over for Anesty in the sixth and allowed a leadoff single before a two-out walk put runners on the corners. The Braves then executed a double steal that brought in their fourth run of the ballgame.
-In the eighth, with reliever RJ Freure (Burlington, ON) one the mound, three hits, including a two run double, a hit by pitch and walk led to four more Braves runs crossing the plate as their lead increased to six.
JNT HIGHLIGHTS
-JNT starter Mike Soroka (Calgary, AB) had little trouble with the Braves retiring eight batters in a row to start the game before giving up a two-out single in the third, while the next batter reached on an error. He struck out three batters in three innings of work.
-The juniors had an opportunity to add to their lead in the third as they loaded the bases with one out, but couldn’t cash in any runs. Tristan Pompey (Milton, ON) led the inning off with a double before Kobe Hyland (Spruce Grove, AB) walked with one out and Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) followed with a single.
-After giving up a run in the sixth, Josh Burgmann settled in for the seventh working a perfect frame getting two fly-outs and a strikeout. He struck out three in two innings of work.
-Offensively, the juniors outhit the Braves, 8-7, with Ando (triple), Pompey (double) and Josh Naylor (double) coming up with extra base hits.
-JNT newcomer Brad Aldred (Whitby, ON) played in his first game wearing the red and white and collected his first hit with the program when he singled in the fourth.
