The win means that Canada will head to the WBSC U-18 World Cup on a high note after they dropped the first seven games of the series. Canada will open the World Cup on Friday against Chinese Taipei.

Michael Brettell (Fonthill, ON) and Mateo Vincelli (Burnaby, BC) combined on the five-hit shutout, while Tristan Pompey (Mississauga, ON) scored the only run of the game after a throwing error in the second inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Canadian starter Michael Brettell (Fonthill, ON) fired six shutout innings where he scattered three hits and a walk, while striking out eight batters. He worked his way out of trouble in the first inning getting a fly-out to right to leave the bases loaded and got a strikeout and pop-out to leave two runners on in the fifth.
-Things didn’t get off to a good start for reliever Matteo Vincelli (Burnaby, BC) who allowed a leadoff double in the seventh. He battled back though getting a groundout and pair of fly-outs to end the inning and leave the runner stranded.
-Vincelli worked his way out of a jam in the eighth and got some tremendous defensive help to keep the Aussies off the scoreboard. An error, single and walk loaded the bases before a strikeout and double play that saw shortstop Kobe Hyland (Spruce Grove, AB) throw to first while in the air to get the out and end the inning.
