U-18 Pre World Cup: Canada swept by Aussies in doubleheader

Canada came up on the wrong end of both games of a doubleheader as the Australian U-18 side shutout the Canadians, 4-0 in game one before coming from behind to earn a 3-2, walk-off win in game two. Australia is now 7-0 in the eight game series with one game remaining, tomorrow (1:00pm AEST/11:00pm EDT).

Prior to tomorrow’s game, Baseball Canada will name the 20-players that will compete in the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Osaka, Japan from August 28th – September 6th.

Starting Pitcher: RHP Brady Moxham

HOW IT HAPPENED

-A leadoff home run on a full count pitch gave Australia an early 1-0 lead on a ball that just inside the foul pole and over the fence in right field. Canadian starter Brady Moxham (Oakville, MB) settled in after that getting a pop out to short and a pair of strikeouts to end the top of the first.
-Australia added to their lead with a run in third as they loaded the bases on three consecutive singles before a fielder’s choice brought in the runner from third.
-Vincent Beauregard (Laval, QC) took over for Moxham to start the fourth and recorded a quick out on a ground out before a double and two walks loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly deep to right field brought in the third Aussie run of the game.
-Three errors led to another Aussie run in the seventh. After two infield errors, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners two second and third, and with the infield drawn in, a ground ball that originally handcuffed shortstop Kobe Hyland was wildly thrown to first.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-After surrendering a leadoff home run to start the game, starter Brady Moxham retired six straight batters and had three straight strikeouts in the span. Moxham went three innings and allowed two runs on four hits, and struck out three batters.
-Luke Van Rycheghem (Kent Bridge, ON) lined a single to right to start the bottom of the fourth to break up the no-hitter. Isaac Deveaux (Montréal, QC) and Peter Hutzal (Calgary, AB) each singled in the bottom of the seventh.
-RJ Freure (Burlington, ON) tossed a perfect sixth inning including two strikeouts. Australia scored an unearned run in the seventh, Freure’s second inning of work. He recorded two strikeouts in the inning for a total of four.
-After allowing a run in the fourth, relief pitcher Vincent Beauregard tossed a perfect fifth inning getting two groundouts and a pop out.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Canada opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Peter Hutzal led off the inning with a single to right, moved to second on a Cooper Davis (Mississauga, ON) sacrifice bunt, advance to third on a ground out before scoring when Kobe Hyland (Spruce Grove, AB) looped a broken bat single into centre. Adam Hall (London, ON) then stepped to the plate and smacked a triple on a ball hit to right field that allowed Hyland to score.
-William Sierra (Montréal, QC) entered the game in the fourth and hit a batter with one out before a ball hit to right-centre, just out of the reach of right fielder Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) fell in for a double to put runners on second and third. Sierra then unleashed a wild pitch that brought one run in, while a sacrifice fly followed to allow the tying run to score.
-After a one-out single and stolen base, a two-out single to right-centre brought in the winning run from second base to end the game.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Canadian starter Tyler Whitbread (Camlachie, ON) was lights out during his three-inning outing. The right-hander gave up just one hit and struck out four batters.
-Peter Hutzal accounted for two of Canada’s five hits as he had a 2-for-2 game at the plate with a pair of singles. He also scored one of Canada’s two runs.
-Will McAffer (North Vancouver, BC) entered the game in the fifth and tossed two perfect frames before Australia managed two hit off of him including the game winning single. McAffer had two strikeouts.
