U-18: Canada blanks Italy, Cuba up next

OSAKA, Japan- Vincent Beauregard (Laval, QC) fired seven shutout innings, while the Canadian offence took advantage of five Italian errors and eight walks to come away with a 10-0 mercy-rule win.

The win improves Canada’s record to 2-1 with two games remaining in Group B action at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup.

“I’m happy that we were able to take care of business today and do what we needed to do to pull out a win,” said Canadian Manager Greg Hamilton. “Vincent gave us seven solid innings (on the mound) which allowed us to rest some guys in our bullpen.”

Box Score – Canada 10 Italy 0 (8 innings)

Canada now faces an important match-up tomorrow against Cuba (3:30pm JST/2:30am EDT) that will put the victorious team in a good position to advance to the second round.”

“Cuba is Cuba and we’ll be in tough tomorrow,” explained Hamilton of facing the longtime international baseball power. “As a group, we’re looking forward to the challenge of competing against them.”

Canada wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they struck for two runs in the bottom of the first. Royce Ando (Mississauga, ON) led off with a double to left and moved to third when Kobe Hyland (Spruce Grove, AB) walked and Adam Hall (London, ON) reached to load the bases after being hit by a pitch. Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON) then stepped to the plate and made it safely to first on a ball that was misplayed by the Italian first baseman, which brought in Ando. Tristan Pompey (Mississauga, ON) followed by grounding into a double play that brought in Kobe Hyland.

Vincent Beauregard looked good early as he worked a scoreless first inning before striking out the side in the second inning after a pair of singles. In the fourth, a lead off double made it to third only to be left on base after Royce Ando made a nice diving catch on a line drive at second to end the inning. In seven innings of work, Beauregard had eight strikeouts and allowed just four hits.

“I felt pretty good tonight,” he said. “Even when I got into a bit of trouble I was able to trust my stuff, pitch my game and work my way out of it.”

Canada got some help in the fifth as they took advantage of three Italian errors and two walks, while Josh Naylor came up with an RBI single as part of a four run inning. He would go on to add a single in the eighth to improve his tournament average to .666 (8-for-12).

RJ Freure (Burlington, ON) took over for Beauregard in the eighth and worked a perfect inning with one strikeout before Canada added three runs in the bottom of the inning to walk-off with the win via the mercy-rule.

Kobe Hyland had a two-run single, while Tristan Pompey’s base hit to left scored him to end the game.
