OTTAWA- Seattle Seahawks tight end Luke Willson realized his dream of playing in the National Football League when the 2013 season opened in September, and, yesterday, the former Baseball Canada Junior National Team member scored his first career touchdown.
Hauling a pass from Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Luke used his game breaking speed to hit the end zone for a 39 yard score in the second-quarter of action against the San Francisco 49ers.
San Francisco proceeded to edge Willson and the Seahawks 19-17 handing them only their second loss of the season.
For Willson, who played his college football at Rice University, his rookie season with the Seahawks has seen him dress for all 13 games and catch 16 passes for 242 yards in back-up role at tight end.
The 6’5”, 251 pound native of LaSalle, Ontario was taken by the Seahawks in the fifth round of the most recent NFL Draft held in April and later signed with the team.
Willson was a member of the Junior National Team in 2008 that competed in the IBAF 18U World Cup in Edmonton where Canada finished in 6th place. When the tournament ended, the then 18 year-old headed to Rice when he was a redshirt freshman.
In 2012, Willson spent some time in extended Spring Training with the Toronto Blue Jays before deciding to concentrate solely on football.
