WNT Experiences Tough Loss to Japan

Maracay, Venezuela- The Women’s National Team lost their second straight contest of Round 2 at the Women’s World Cup by a score of 6-2 to Japan. The WNT now faces a must win game against Cuba if they hope to advance to the medal round.

Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) gave the Canadians a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning when she doubled to score Ashley Stephenson (Mississauga, ON) and Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB).

With Canada hanging on to a 1 run lead in the 4th inning, Japan struck for 2 runs to go ahead 3-2. Amazingly enough, Japan scored both runs in the inning without recording a hit as they were able to take advantage of two Canadian errors, a walk and two hit batters.

Vanessa Riopel (Repentigny, QC) was tagged with the loss although only 1 of the 3 runs she gave up was earned.

Japan would score 3 more runs in the 5th inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead which would hold up for the rest of the game.

Notes: Canada now faces a must win game on August 20th against Cuba, with the first pitch scheduled for 10:30am ET. ...
