Even Steven Between Juniors and Indians

Even Steven Between Juniors and Indians

April 16, 2008

ORLANDO, FL – In what was a nail bitter through out between the Junior National Team and the Cleveland Indians here in Spring Training action, the pitchers dominated as both teams could not get anything across and would play to a 1-1, 10-inning draw. All the scoring came early and it would be the Canadians who would break the ice in the bottom of the first.  Brett Lawrie (Langley, BC) hit a double off the left field wall and would come around to score on Jeff Hunt’s (Cambridge, ON) RBI single to put Canada ahead. The Indians would reply in the third inning when a throwing error from the Canadian defence allowed the Indians’ runner on second to score and tie the game. From there, neither team could take advantage of scoring chances with both teams unable to convert with two runners on-base and only one out in the tenth inning.  Canada would strand a total of 10 runners on-base, while the Indians stranded seven. The real story of the game however was the performance of the pitchers.  Stosh Wawrzasek (Langley, BC) got the nod for the Canadians would go on to allow only one run, which was unearned, with one hit and a walk and would fanned six over his three innings of work. David Walkling (Nanaimo, BC) took over for Wawrzasek and picked up where he left off.  Walkling only allowed two hit and a walk with a pair of stirkeouts in his three inning outing. The ball was then handed over to Danny Britton-Foster (Ladysmith, BC) to close the door the rest of the way.  He would work the final four innings, giving up only two hits and a pair of walks to Indians’ hitters. The Houston Astros will be the next opponent on the Junior National Team’s Spring Training schedule on Wednesday, April 16th at 1 pm.

Tigers Roar Past Juniors in Spring Training

Tigers Roar Past Juniors in Spring Training

April 15, 2008

ORLANDO, FL – The Detroit Tigers took no time to put points on the board against the Junior National Team in Spring Training action, including a four-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach and give the Canadians a 9-2 loss. The Tigers got the offence rolling immediately in the top of the first inning when a walk and back-to-back singles, all with two outs, put them up 1-0. The Juniors would respond in kind in the bottom half of the inning on a Marcus Knecht (Toronto, ON) single to score Ivan Hartle (North Vancouver, BC), who was 2-for-3 in the game, and tie the game at one run apiece. The Tigers would take the lead back in the second inning on a two-run double to make it 3-1. The score would be 4-1 in the fourth inning when Canada would reduce the lead to two after Brett Lawrie (Langley, BC) doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Luke Willson (Windsor, ON). From there, the Tigers put the Juniors behind the eight ball when they would score four runs in the fifth inning on four straight hits (single, double, single, home run) to increase the lead to 8-2.  They would add another run in the sixth to complete the scoring. On the mound, Andrew Ledger (Toronto, ON) started for the Canadians and went two innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while punching out three. François Lafrenière (St-Bruno, QC) came in relief of Ledger and threw two innings, giving up one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts in his outing. Nick Fogarty (Thornhill, ON) threw the next two innings and allowed five runs on six hits while striking out two Nick Bucci (Sarnia, ON) and Jean-Christophe Paquin (St-Augustin, QC) combined to shutout the Tigers for the final three innings.  Bucci allowed two hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings of work.  Paquin threw one inning and allowed one hit and a walk with two strikeouts. The next Spring Training game for the Junior National Team will be on Tuesday, April 15th at 1 pm versus the Cleveland Indians.

Juniors Succumb to Braves in Spring Training

Juniors Succumb to Braves in Spring Training

April 14, 2008

ORLANDO, FL – The game started off well for the Junior National Team, but then the Atlanta Braves offence would blow the game wide open with a big sixth inning and would hand the Juniors a 14-3 setback. The Braves offence would explode for eight runs in the sixth to take control of the game.  They would add three runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to add to complete the scoring. But it was the Canadians who took the lead early with a home run from Michael Crouse (Port Moody, BC) to leadoff the second inning and taking a 1-0 lead. The Canadians would add to that lead in the fourth inning when Brett Lawrie (Langley, BC) led off the inning with a double and would come in to score on a Carter Bell (Courtenay, BC) groundout.  With two outs in the inning, Jonathan Gilbert (St-Georges, QC) drew a walk and Crouse was hit by a pitch which brought up Jeff Hunt (Cambridge, ON).  Hunt hit a ground rule double to score Gilbert and put Canada ahead 3-0. Nathan Linseman (Ariss, ON) started on the mound for Canada and put up a solid performance, giving up only two hits and a walk in two innings of work. Evan Grills (Whitby, ON) followed Linseman and was perfect in his outing, going two innings and striking out a pair in the process. But the Braves found their offence in the sixth and would score 14 runs on 10 hits for the remainder of the game, including the eight run sixth inning. The next Spring Training Camp game for the Junior National Team will be against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, April 14th at 1 pm.

Juniors Fall to Astros in Spring Training Opener

April 13, 2008

ORLANDO, FL – It was a good first outing for the Junior National Team at their Spring Training Camp, but in the end they would fall at the hands of the Houston Astros in their opener by a score of 4-0. Starting things off on the mound for the Juniors was Brad Furdal (Ancaster, ON) who would go two innings, allowing one run on one hit with a walk and a hit batsman to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Stosh Wawrzasek (Langley, BC) and Danny Britton-Foster (Ladysmith, BC) had strong outings in this game.  Wawrzasek threw a prefect third and fourth innings with one strikeout, while Britton-Foster allowed only one hit and a walk with while fanning a pair in his two innings of work. In between those outings, already with a 1-0 lead the Astros would add to it on a walk, a single and a pair of infield hits to score one run off of David Walkling (Nanaimo, BC), who allowed only the one run on five hits and a walk with a strikeout in his two inning outing. Finishing things off on the mound for the Canadians was Philippe Charpentier (L’Épiphanie, QC) who would allow the final two runs of the game, both unearned thanks to an error followed by a double which allowed both runs to score in the ninth inning.  In his one inning of work, Charpentier gave up two unearned runs and two hits while striking out one. Offensively, the Canadians put up three hits of Astros’ pitching, two of which came from Marcus Knecht (Toronto, ON), who was 2-for-3, with the other coming from Brett Lawrie (Langley, BC), who was 1-for-3. The Junior National Team will play their second game of Spring Training on Sunday, April 13th at 10 am against the Atlanta Braves.
