Canada Cup Update: Round-robin action heats up

MONCTON- After rain cancelled two games from Day 1 of the Baseball Canada Cup, round-robin play resumed with nine scheduled games on Day 2. BC 4 Ontario 3 BC scored three runs in the bottom of the 6th to earn a come from behind 4-3 victory over Ontario, giving them their second win of the tournament. BC’s Nathan Ackerman (Langley, BC) provided the big-blow in the 6th when he smoked a two-run homer and Billy Germaine (Aldergrove, BC) scored the go ahead run later in the inning. Up until that point Ontario held a 3-1 lead on the strength of Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) who pitched five innings allowing one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out five BC batters. Ontario had scored a run in the first, second and sixth innings to take the lead. Mitchell Triolo (Scarborough, ON) had two hits and an RBI in the loss. Nova Scotia 6 Saskatchewan 5 Nova Scotia built a big lead early and held off a late surge from Saskatchewan for a 6-5 victory. Already up 2-0 in the third, Nova Scotia’s Luke Muise (Yarmouth, NS) hit a bases-loaded double which cleared the bases for a 5-0 lead. Saskatchewan would answer back with a run in the bottom of the third and after Nova Scotia scored another run in the fourth, Saskatchewan put two more across in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-3. Ryan Filyk (Regina, SK) laced a double to score two runs in the fourth. Anthony McKinley (Dartmouth, NS) allowed the three runs to Saskatchewan and saw his day finish after the fourth with eight strikeouts. Saskatchewan did not go away quietly as they scored runs in each of the fifth and sixth frames to come within one, but it wasn’t enough as Scott Harrison (Eastern Passage, NS) induced a three-up three-down seventh to seal the win. Québec 5 Alberta 0 Alex Clavet (St-Nicholas, QC) and Bryan Corona (Montréal, QC) combined for seven scoreless innings on the mound as Québec blanked Alberta 5-0. After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Québec put up four runs in the third to go up 5-0. After singling in a run in the second frame, Samuel Fournier-Lachance (Chambly, QC) delivered a double which scored two runs. Guillaume Gingras (Lévis, QC) had two hits and scored two runs in the game for the winning side. Clavet was awarded the victory after going 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. New Brunswick 9 Newfoundland 3 Hometown favourite New Brunswick finally got their first game of the tournament in and easily defeated Newfoundland 9-3. New Brunswick built an 8-0 lead before Newfoundland broke the shutout in the sixth inning. Cody Dickson (Miramichi, NB) and Travis Harris (Fredericton, NB) each collected two hits and an RBI while Luc Hebert (Cocagne, NB) tossed six innings on the mound to record the win. Dan Connors (Mount Pearl, NL) had a hit and an RBI for Newfoundland. Ontario 6 Alberta 1 Mitchell Triolo (Scarborough, ON) had two hits and two RBI’s as Ontario got back in the win column with a 6-1 win over Alberta. Michael Clouthier (Guelph, ON) got the win as he went four innings on the mound allowing only two hits and three walks while striking out four. Brett Siddall (Windsor, ON) had two hits including a double for Ontario. BC 8 Québec 3 BC kept their perfect record intact with an 8-3 win over Québec to put them atop the Pool standings. Justin Geerts (Surrey, BC) threw four innings of one-hit ball and struck out five Québec batters to get the win. Max Hollingworth (Coquitlam, BC) paced the BC offence with two hits, two RBI’s and a run scored. Philippe Craig St-Louis (Gatineau, QC) hit a solo homerun for Québec in the first inning. PEI 5 Newfoundland 1 PEI earned their first win of the Canada Cup after a 5-1 defeat of Newfoundland. PEI scored three times in the third inning, two more in the seventh and Jordan Stevenson (Hunter River, PEI) had two doubles and four RBI’s. John Patrick Stevenson (Hunter River, PEI) earned the win on the mound while Newfoundland’s Myles Vincent (Corner Brook, NL) had fourteen strikeouts in a losing cause. Manitoba 4 New Brunswick 3 Manitoba scored three times in third inning, including a two-run double from Matt Benn (Teulon, MB), and hung on to beat New Brunswick 4-3. Luke Whelpton (Brandon, MB) threw a complete game for Manitoba and struck out seven in the victory. Jake Shaw (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB) has eight strikeouts in the loss for New Brunswick. Manitoba 9 PEI 1 After defeating New Brunswick, Manitoba immediately faced PEI and made quick work of them with a 9-1 win. The victory saw Manitoba score six runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a Ryan Ozunko (Winnipeg, MB) two-run single. Ozunko had two hits and three RBI for Manitoba while Eric Benson (Oak Bluff, MB) threw six innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts to record the win.
