Senior Women Invitational: Day 1 recap

OTTAWA- The Senior Women Invitational began today and Québec sits atop the standings after wins over Québec 2 and Ontario.

Ontario won earlier in the day to sit a 1-1, while Alberta (1-0) also picked up their first win of the tournament.

Here is a recap of the day’s action that took place at Napoléon-Fontaine Stadium in Granby, Québec.

Québec 16 Québec (2) 6

After building a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Québec exploded for six runs in the fourth and added another six in the fifth to mercy Québec (2) 16-6. Stéphanie Savoie had an RBI double in the first as part of a 2-for-4 day with two RBI, while Gabrielle Perreault contributed three singles and scored two runs. Daphnnée Gelinas started for Québec and gave-up two runs on five hits in three innings of work, while Marie-André Rousseau picked-up the win tossing two innings in relief. Cynthia Chiasson enjoyed a 3-for-3 day at the plate for Québec (2) with a double and one RBI.

Ontario 10 BC 0

Defending champion Ontario got off on the right foot with a 10-0 shutout win over BC as Hannah Martenson (Ottawa, ON) tossed five scoreless innings on the mound, allowing only two hits, and went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Jenna Flannigan was 3-for-4, while Autumn Mills collected two hits and two RBI, and Kate Psota had two hits and one RBI.

Alberta 8 Québec (2) 5

Alberta survived a late scare from Québec (2), after having a seven run lead in the seventh, to earn an 8-5 win to move to 1-0. Bradi Wall, Rachelle Nasello and Meagan Cornelssen each had two hits with Cornelssen clubbing an RBI double in the first. Québec’s Evelyne Verrette paced her club offensively with two singles and one run scored.

Québec 8 Ontario 3

Leading 2-0 after three innings, Québec exploded for six runs in the fifth and held on for an 8-3 win over Ontario to pick up their second win of the day. Stéphanie Savoie was once again the offensive star as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Valérie Paquette went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Québec starter Sabrina Périard was very solid on the mound in picking up the win by tossing five scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and striking out three. Ontario’s Jenna Flannigan went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
