OTTAWA-Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON) went 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to help Ontario defend their crown at the Senior Women Invitational with a 7-3 win over Québec.
Ontario avenged a loss to Québec earlier in the week, while handing the hosts their first loss of the tournament.
Québec led 1-0 after two innings until Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) came up with the bases loaded and two in the top of the third and delivered a single to bring in two runs and give Ontario the lead.
Ontario added three runs in the fourth with two scoring on a triple from Jenna Flannigan.
Ontario starter Hannah Martensen (Ottawa, ON) gave her club four innings on the mound giving up three runs which came on four hits and five walks.
Martensen managed three strikeouts and gave way to Brinley McLaren (Brantford, ON) in the fifth who tossed two innings that saw her give up only one hit and walk two.
Ontario out-hit their counterparts from Québec 13-6 with Flannigan, Psota, Autumn Mills (Toronto, ON) and Cindy Saavedra (Toronto, ON) having multi-hit games.
Québec’s Emilie Laliberté (Granby, QC) had a single and RBI.
Earlier in the day, Alberta earned a 3-0 win over BC to win the bronze medal game.
Liacnis Rodriguez (Edmonton, AB) was the story on the mound tossing a complete-game shutout giving up only three hits and two walks, while striking out two.
Meagan Cornelssen (Grande-Prairie, AB) had an RBI double, while Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) and Ashley MacMullin (Grande-Prairie, AB) each had RBI singles.
Three tournament awards were handed out with Ontario’s Jenna Flannigan taking the top hitter award, Alberta’s Bradi Wall winning the tournament’s top defensive player and Québec’s Stéphanie Savoie being named top catcher.
Even though the Senior Women Invitational has come to close for another season, there is still plenty of women’s baseball to be played in Granby, QC later this week.
The Canada-Japan Women’s Series begins on July 17th and runs through to July 21st with two games per day at Napoléon-Fontaine Stadium.
National Team coaches will select two teams made up of players who participated in the Senior Women Invitational to represent Canada against a pair of touring Japanese squads.
