In other action at the Canada Cup on Wednesday, a battle of the titans ended with a 2-1 British Columbia victory over Ontario in the 10 a.m. game at Berard Field. Ontario was nursing a 1-0 lead late in the game, but walked in two B.C. runners with the bases loaded to drop to 0-1 on the tourney.

Prince Edward Island dumped Newfoundland and Labrador 7-1 in the 1 p.m. game at Berard, scoring three runs in the first and fourth innings as well as one in the fifth. Newfoundland’s lone run came in the third inning. Shortstop Mitch MacLean, whose fourth-inning double plated two runs, was named P.E.I.’s player of the game, with Steve Brien taking the honour for Newfoundland.

Alberta took out Nova Scotia 13-6 in the noon game at Flanagan, while Ontario mercied New Brunswick 11-0 at Flanagan in the afternoon. B.C. edged Quebec 2-0 at Berard, picking up an insurance run in the top of the seventh to get the win for starter Mike Ellis. Brian Bardis took the loss for Quebec in a strong performance.

Saskatchewan defeated Manitoba 7-2 Wednesday evening (see full story for details).
