Players, coaches, parents and fans packed Berard Field Wednesday night to officially ring in the 2009 Baseball Canada Cup in Kindersley.

All 10 provinces marched into the field one by one to the beat of a drum, lining the basepaths all the way around, with Team Saskatchewan entering last to enormous cheers from the capacity crowd.

Darla Dorsett served as emcee for the ceremony, with other speakers including Mayor John Boquist, tournament co-chair Jamie Flanagan, Baseball Canada director general Jim Baba and provincial sport minister Dustin Duncan.

Flanagan threw out the tournament's opening pitch to his son, Sean, who is playing second base for Saskatchewan.

It’s fantastic that a community the size of Kindersley can host a national tournament of this stature,” said Duncan, who played baseball in his younger days. “The number of ball players who will go through this and go to professional baseball... for Kindersley to put on a thing like this, it’s great for the community and also the province. It shows that Regina and Saskatoon don’t get all the big events.

“It also shows the love of baseball in rural Saskatchewan,” the minister added. “Go to any rural community in the summer and chances are there will be a ball game going on.”

Following the opening ceremonies, Team Saskatchewan rocked Berard Field with a 7-2 win over Manitoba.
