Mets open baseball nats with win

TIGNISH - The Halifax Mets of Nova Scotia used an eight run first inning en
route to a 9-1 win over Newfoundland and Labrador Blazers of Mount Pearl here
Thursday morning to open the 2006 Greco Baseball Canada Midget nationals.
The community of Tignish, at the western tip of P.E.I., and the City of
Summerside are co-hosts for this event.
Jason Smith and Justin MacGillavary, in relief, combined to allow just two hits
through the seven inning game, which appeared as if N.S. may take it early after
the explosive first.
Leading Nova Scotia’s attack was Justin MacGillvary (2-4, two RBI, run scored),
Scott Creelman (3-5, two runs scored, RBI, double) and Don McCann (2-3, walk,
run scored).
Nick Hayden(2-3, walk, run scored) was all the NL representatives from Mount
Pearl could muster.
It was played before about 150 fans at the newly-refurbished Aces Diamond, where
even one ball went as a long single hititng what has been dubbed as Tignish's
Silver Monster in right field.
Nova Scotia coach Ron MacNeil was pleased with the way the game outing, but
disappointed his team let up and almost allowed NL back in the game.
“I thought we played well,” he said. “We let up after that big first inning but
our pitching and defense kept us in it and allowed us to get the win.
“Our bats were soft and they (the players) have to realize we can’t let up like
that.”
