2006 Rogers Canadian Junior Baseball Championships 5 Weeks Away and Counting
July 20, 2006

For six days August 23rd to 28th 2006, the Guelph Silvercreeks and the City of Guelph will play host to over 250 of Canada’s finest 18-21 year old baseball players, their coaches, families as well as professional and amateur baseball scouts. Together, almost 8,000 will participate in one of the best amateur baseball experiences in our country – The Junior Canadian National Baseball Championships. For the uninitiated, these National Championships represent Baseball Canada’s equivalent to Junior Hockey’s Memorial Cup. The 2006 Canadian Junior Baseball Championships will be held at The Larry Pearson Complex from August 23rd to 28th 2006.

Two years ago Guelph was chosen to host the event. Despite a rich history in Baseball dating back to 1874 when the Guelph Maple Leafs won the World Baseball Championship this marks the first time a National Championship was ever been staged in the Royal City.

Nine Provincial Champions plus the host Guelph Silvercreeks, two time defending champions of the Junior Inter-County Baseball League will take part in the 4 day play downs. Quebec was the 2005 Champions in the event played in Saskatoon. Teams who now qualified for this year are St John's Capitals (NFLD), Fredericton Leons Vikings (NB) and Dartmouth Junior AAA (NS).

All games which begin August 24th are scheduled for Larry J. Pearson Park, the city’s new south end Baseball Complex that is one of the finest in the country.

More information can accessed at the tournament website, www.guelph2006.com.

Media requests for information and accreditation can be done by contacting either Peter Barnsley or Don Lajoie.

Tournament passes are now available at all Guelph Silvercreeks home games from now until the tournament begins. “We really feel that the way we’ve priced out tickets is consistent with the primary objective of the event which is to showcase baseball in Guelph”, explains Tournament Chairman Larry Pearson. Tournament organizers are providing four full days of National Junior Baseball for $20.00 at the gate on day one or $15.00 in advance of the tournament. You can also request tickets at the tournament website, www.guelph2006.com.

Additionally there is still a need for volunteers to help run this major event. The tournament website has this information and a form to fill out from interested parties.
