National Championships: Peewee Atlantic Day 2 Recap

Summerside, PEI- A total of eight games were played on Day 2 of the Peewee Atlantic championship which wrapped up the round-robin portion of the tournament.

The day started off with a pitcher’s duel as Charlottetown narrowly defeated Yarmouth 3-2. The game was scoreless through five innings until Cole Jacquard (Yarmouth, NS) scored on fielder’s choice to break the tie. Yarmouth would add another run in the seventh inning only to see Charlottetown storm back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to win the game. Kallum Muirhead (Charlottetown, PEI) started things off with an RBI single and then came around to score the winning run thanks to a Yarmouth error. Devon Simmons (Charlottetown, PEI) was awarded the win but the story on the mound for Charlottetown was Brodie Koughan (Charlottetown, PEI) who went 4 2/3 innings and struck out seven batters. For Yarmouth, Nathan Bezanson (Yarmouth, NS) tossed six innings and struck out five batters in the loss.

Shawn Hickey (Saint John, NB) picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 3 2/3 innings of one-hit ball as Saint John beat St. John’s 6-1. Jarrod Beers (Saint John, NB) had two hits and two RBI to lead the Saint John attack.

Halifax continued their dominance in the tournament as they hammered Summerside 14-6. The story of the game was Campbell Pickard (Halifax, NS) who had two hits, scored one run and had four RBI. Matthew Barlow (Summerside, PEI) was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Summerside.

KV from New Brunswick evened their record at 1-1 when they beat Mount Pearl 5-3. Luke Richard (Quispamsis, NB) had a performance to remember as he pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up only three hits and struck out an incredible thirteen batters to earn the win.

Yarmouth got back on the winning track as they outlasted Saint John 8-6. Colton Beech (Kennetcook, NS) tossed the victory and also had two hits and an RBI. Shiv Sardona (Saint John, NB) had quite the game offensively as he recorded three hits, scored three runs and had two RBI.

St. John’s pounded out ten hits as they also picked up a victory in the form of an 8-6 decision over Charlottetown. Blake Fudge (Conception Bay South, NL) and Tyler Hennessy (Conception Bay South, NL) both homered in the first inning for St. John’s.

Halifax booked their ticket to the semi-final with a 9-1 drubbing of the KV club from New Brunswick. Halifax spread around their offensive attack with Blair Dewtie (New Glasgow, NS) and Nick Welsh (Halifax, NS) each picking up two RBI. Adam Downey (Quispamsis, NB) had three hits for KV.

In the final round-robin game, Summerside gave Mount Pearl all they could handle in winning 16-3. Jayden MacLean (Summerside, PEI) was awarded the victory and also went 2-for-4, including a homerun and three RBI. Tanner MacLean (Sherwood, PEI) also homered.

Notes: The playoff picture is now set as Halifax will meet Yarmouth in one semi-final and Charlottetown will play Summerside in the other semi. Battling it out for 5th place will be KV and Saint John while the 7th place game has Mount Pearl taking on St. John’s.
