The Skinny on Pee Wee Baseball
August 17, 2006

"Real baseball” for 11 and 12 year olds!

Did you know that:

Pee Wee Baseball is played by more 11 and 12 year olds in BC and the rest of Canada than any other brand of youth baseball

In 2001 there was no Pee Wee baseball played in Victoria.  In 2006 there are now 171 Pee Wee players and more are expected next year.  Pee Wee baseball is also played in Ladysmith, Duncan, Port Alberni, Parksville/Qualicum Beach, Courtenay, Comox and Campbell River

Pee Wee baseball provides opportunities for all boys and girls of all levels of skill, interest and competitiveness with three tiers (Single A, AA and AAA)

The basepaths in Pee Wee baseball are 70 feet long and the outfield dimensions are typically 220 to 250 feet deep, which are better suited to the strength and speed of the players.  Pee Wee Baseball opens up the game for infield double plays and extra-base hits

Players find Pee Wee baseball more fun because of the chance to lead-off and the need for pitchers to hold runners on

Pee Wee baseball is part of the Canadian Baseball System and is played throughout every province in Canada

Three time Major League NL Batting Champ and MVP Larry Walker played Pee Wee baseball in Ridge Meadows, Colorado Rockies Pitcher Jeff Francis in North Delta and Minnesota Twins slugger Justin Morneau in New Westminster

Pee Wee baseball is a key part of the graduated Canadian system from Mosquito to Pee Wee to Bantam and Midget where the pitching and bathpath distances increase for each two year division.  Diamonds change gradually in line with the increase in player size and strength

Over the past few years, the following minor baseball associations have left the US – based Little League program and joined the Canadian Baseball Program for their five to 12 year old players --- Gordon Head, American/Allenby, Triangle and Sidney/North Saanich (Blastball, T-Ball, Initiation, Novice, Mosquito, Pee Wee)

In the year 2000, Carnarvon, Lambrick Park, Layritz, West Shore and Peninsula all left the US – based Babe Ruth program  and joined the Canadian Baseball Program for their 13 to 17 year old players (Bantam, Midget)

All the baseball programs for players over the age of twelve in greater Victoria are provided through the Canadian Baseball Program; there is no Little League baseball played in Victoria past the age of 12.

The Canadian Baseball Program is coordinated across the southern tip of Vancouver Island through the Greater Victoria Minor Baseball Association (GVMBA).  GVMBA has the following members – Carnarvon/Allenby Baseball Association, Gordon Head Baseball Association, Lambrick Park Baseball Association, Layritz Intermediate Baseball Association, Peninsula Baseball Association, Sidney/North Saanich Baseball Association, West Shore Baseball Association, Triangle Baseball Association and Lower Vancouver Island Baseball Association

GVMBA provides programs for Pee Wee players at all skill levels in three seasons: Spring, Summer and Fall
