Pat Connolly Named Honorary Chairman for Baseball Nationals
Paul Arsenault, the Chairman of this year’s Canadian Senior Baseball Championship, to be hosted by the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry for the second consecutive year, has announced that veteran Maritime sportscaster and journalist, Pat Connolly, has been named Honorary Chairman of this year’s event.
In making the announcement, Arsenault said that the “organizing committee was thrilled to have Pat Connolly accept this position. He was the only person who was considered because he exemplifies the type of classy person we would want associated with his prestigious national event.”
Connolly started his career in journalism in 1945 with the Cape Breton Post and the Halifax Chronicle Herald before moving into broadcasting with CJCB Radio in Sydney, CJCH Radio and CBC Halifax. His baseball roots are well-established as he was the “radio voice” for the Halifax Capitals and the Dartmouth Arrows in the H and D League from 1952 to 1960. He follows baseball very closely at the local level to this very day.
He has been the voice of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, the Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Oilers, and the Halifax Citadels as well as the arena game announcer for the Halifax Mooseheads before officially retiring in Sept., 2009.
He is a member of the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame and was awarded an Honourary Doctor of Laws Degree in 2006 from S. Mary’s University. He was also honoured by the Halifax Regional Municipality during its 250th Anniversary celebrations and more recently was named a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for his longstanding work as a journalist and volunteer.
In his usual modest manner, Connolly simply said when approached about the position: “I am thrilled to be asked and honoured to serve.”
The Canadian Senior Baseball Championship will be held from Aug. 26 – 29 in Dartmouth and Halifax.
