September 07, 2012

OTTAWA – Day 2 concluded with four round-robin games played.  The remaining portion of round-robin play will finish tomorrow morning, with the placement games and semi-finals to be played in the afternoon and evening.

Here is a recap of today’s match-ups.

Newfoundland – Grand Falls-Windsor  6  New Brunswick – Fredericton 5

Newfound dug themselves out of an early whole to sneak out a victory over Fredericton.  Trailing 4-0 after the first inning, Newfoundland quickly tied it with four runs of their own an inning later to get back in it.  They would a couple more runs later in the game and hang on.  Matthew Janes (Mount Pearl, NL) finished the game with two RBI and also pitched two innings, striking out four batters.  Tyrel Poore (Frederticton, NB) had two hits and two RBI in a losing effort.

New Brunswick – Moncton  11  St. John’s 5

New Brunswick scored six runs before the game was three innings old to help lead them to the win.  They would score three more in the fifth inning to help seal the victory.  Benn Carson (Hillsborough, NB) and Bryson Woodworth (Moncton, NB) supplied plenty of offense for New Brunswick, combining for two home runs, seven RBI and four runs scored.  Dylan Mackey (St. John’s, NL) had two RBI for his squad.

PEI – Charlottetown 12  Nova Scotia – Bridgewater 5

The score was tight until PEI exploded for four runs in the fourth inning to pull away towards the victory.  Kallum Muirhead (Winsloe, PE) was the leader offensively for his team picking up two hits and four RBI, while Ryan Cameron (Charlottetown, PE) battled his way through four and two-thirds innings to grab the win on the mound.  Zack Zinck (Bridgewater, NS) had two hits and two RBI in a losing cause.

Nova Scotia – Tri County 19  PEI – Summerside 10

There was plenty of offense to go around in this game as both team reached double-digits in the run column; however, it was Nova Scotia who came away with the win.  Many players contributed offensively, but Matthew Welsh (Halifax, NS) stood out with a home run and six RBI.  He would also pitch one and one-third scoreless innings.  Karson Myers (Richmond, PE) would go on to score three of his team’s ten runs in the defeat.
