OTTAWA – If yesterday’s semi-finals are any indication of what’s to come, then Sunday’s championship will go down to the wire. Both Charlottetown and Fredericton managed to squeak out wins in two thrilling games. Both teams have combined for only one loss throughout the tournament, and will be looking to take home the trophy to their respective cities.
The Gold medal game is scheduled for a 1pm ADT start (11:30am ET) while Bronze medal game will commence at 10am ADT (8:30am ET).
The following is a recap of yesterday’s games.
Semi-final #1
PEI – Charlottetown 7 Nova Scotia – Tri County 5
Chandler Laporte’s (Cornwall, PE) two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning gave PEI the lead, and Hunter McQuaid (Cornwall, PE) struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh to secure their team’s birth in Sunday’s final. The game went back and forth as both teams exchanged leads four times until PEI eventually pulled away. Three PEI pitchers combined to strike out 11 Nova Scotia hitters, which was a huge factor in the victory.
Semi-final #2
New Brunswick – Fredericton 1 Nova Scotia – Bridgewater 0
It was a pitcher duel up until the last inning when New Brunwick scored in their final at-bat to secure their spot in Sunday’s championship game. New Brunwick’s Zachary Newman (Mirimachi, NB) was practically unhittable in this game, striking out 12 batters over seven spectacular innings while allowing only three base runners the entire game and walking no one. Zack Zinck (Bridgewater, NS) was equally as good in the heart-breaking loss, striking out 11 batters while only allowing four base runners to reach base all game. Nova Scotia – Tri County 16 Newfoundland – Grand Falls-Windsor 2
With the game close up until the sixth inning, Nova Scotia exploded for an astonishing 13 runs to blow the game wide open and grab the win. They batted around twice in the inning, sending 18 batters to the plate. Matthew Welsh (Halifax, NS) hit two home runs and also drove in three runs, while Bryce Davis (Lower Sackville, NS) also had three RBI. Shawn Hubley (Sheet Harbour, NS) pitched all six innings striking out eight and walking none in the process.
New Brunswick – Fredericton 8 PEI – Summerside 4
New Brunswick got out to the early lead with three first inning runs, and cruised the rest of the way en route to the 8-4 win. The team from Fredericton flexed their muscles at the plate, getting one home run each from Tyrel Poore (Fredericton, NB), Zachary Newman (Miramichi, NB) and Jack Ryan (Fredericton, NB). Poore also started the game on the mound and struck out seven through his four and two-thirds innings. Alex Gallant (Summerside, PE) drove in two runs in the losing effort.
PEI – Charlottetown 10 New Brunswick – Moncton 9
Gavin Hickey (Charlottetown, PE) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as PEI came back to defeat New Brunswick by a final score of 10-9. PEI overcame a three run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring one run and then adding two more an inning later. Leadoff hitter Elijah Hood (Charlottetown, PEI) was a huge factor scoring four of his team’s 10 runs and also contributing with four stolen bases. Bryson Woodworth (Moncton, NB) hit a grand slam home run for New Brunswick.
Nova Scotia – Bridgewater 8 St. John’s 2
Nova Scotia used a wide spread offensive attack to help defeat the host St. John’s team by a score of 8-2. They scored at least one run in all but two innings to pull away for the win. Leadoff hitter Matthew Stackhouse (Halifax, NS) was a terror at the plate and on the base paths, finishing the game with three hits, four stolen bases and four runs scored. Ryan O’Toole (Bridgewater, NS) through six solid innings on the mound, striking out nine in the process to pick up the victory.
PEI – Summerside 8 New Brunswick – Moncton 4
PEI got on the board early with four first inning runs and never looked back en route to doubling up New Brunswick by a count of 8-4. Colten Perry (North Bedeque, PE) led the way offensively with a home run and four RBI, while Logan MacDougall (Summerside, PE) also connected with a home run. He also had three hits and three runs scored. Patrick Hynes (Moncton, NB) had two hits and scored two of his team’s four runs in the loss. St. John’s 14 Newfoundland – Grand Falls-Windsor 8
St. John’s came out of the gates swinging early and scored eight runs before the first inning was even over. With an eight run leading heading into the fifth inning, St. John’s managed to hold off a furious comeback attempt as Newfoundland managed to cut the lead back down to two runs. However, it would be too little too late as St. John’s would add some insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning to help seal the victory. Michael McCarthy (St. John’s, NL) and Joel Abbott (Portugal Cove St Phillips, NF) had three RBI each in the game, while Abbott also homered.
