2012 Baseball Canada Cup ChampionshipsAug 8-13   London, Ontario

OTTAWA – Eight games.  Eight wins.  That is what Team Ontario accomplished en route to repeating as Canada Cup champions.   With this year’s title, Ontario has now won four of the past eight tournaments.  

Ontario 9  BC 8

Two offensive outbursts in the fourth and fifth innings helped propel Ontario to capture their second straight Canada Cup title with a heart-wrenching 9-8 victory over BC. 

Trailing 3-1 entering the fourth inning, Ontario sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs in the process.  After already scoring a run, Malik Collymore (Mississauga, ON) continued Ontario’s momentum by driving in three of his game high five RBI with a bases clearing triple that also gave them their first lead of the game.  They would add to that lead an inning later, this time sending all nine players to the plate and scoring another four runs. 

Seeing themselves down by five runs entering the bottom half of the fifth inning, BC knew there was still plenty of baseball to be played.  They slowly chipped away at the Ontario lead, coming within one run.  Tyler o’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC), Mitchell Robinson (Surrey, BC) and Lachlan Fontaine (North Vancouver, BC) all reached base in each of their at bats, but it wasn’t enough as Blake Weston (Oakville, ON) struck out three of the four batters he faced to close out the game.    

Québec 7  Manitoba 2 (Bronze Medal)

After losing in the semi-final only an hour earlier, Québec made sure not to go home empty handed, winning the Bronze medal by defeating Manitoba 7-2.  Québec’s Ercia Bastida Nelson (Sherbrooke, QC) started things off, driving in the first of three first inning runs to take a quick lead.  He finished the game with three hits and two RBI.  This is Québec’s first medal since winning silver in 2009. 

In today’s other placement game, Alberta edged out Nova Scotia 6-5.

15 Alberta hits led to six runs, which was enough to get past Nova Scotia.  Six Alberta players had multi-hit games led by left fielder Brayden Munro’s (Okotoks, AB) three.  He also drove in a run.
