Baseball Canada Cup Underway
August 12, 2010

Kindersley, SK- Action kicked-off at the Baseball Canada Cup today in Kindersley, SK. The following is a recap of the first three games that were played.

Game 1: Québec-10 New Brunswick-0

The first game of the tournament featured a Pool A match-up that looked as though it was going to be a tight affair. Both starters, Corey Wood (Fredericton, NB) and Vincent Ouellette (Deux-Montagnes, QC) were able to keep the game scoreless through 3 innings. However, Québec broke the scoreless tie in a big way in the 4th innings by scoring 7 runs which chased Wood from the game.  Kevin Bergeron (Terrebonne, QC) picked up an RBI single in the inning, but he did the most damage in the 6th inning by belting a 3–run homerun to put Québec up 10-0 and end the game via the mercy rule. Ouellette pitched 4 solid innings to pick up the win.

Game 2: BC-3 Ontario-2

The marquee game of the morning was a battle between defending champ BC and last year’s Bronze Medal winner’s, Ontario. The game didn’t disappoint going to extra innings as BC scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th as Jordan Varga (Port Coquitlam, BC) advanced to home from 3rd base because of an Ontario error. Ontario opened the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, ON) took advantage of a BC error to score the game’s first run. BC would tie the game in the 6th inning when Justin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) recorded an RBI single. In extra innings Ontario would regain the lead in the 8th only to see BC score one in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. After Atkinson reached first base on an error, Dustin Houle (Penticton, BC) blasted a double off the wall in centre field to score Atkinson. BC was unable to score Houle later in the inning which set-up the 9th inning dramatics. Alex Graham (North Vancouver, BC) pitched 4 innings to earn the win for BC while Ontario’s Roberto Suppa (Connor, ON) took the loss.

Game 3: Alberta-8 Nova Scotia-1

The first Pool B game of the day featured an East vs. West battle with Alberta coming out on top with a lopsided 8-1 victory over Nova Scotia. After Nova Scotia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st Alberta was able to score runs in the 2nd through 5th innings to build a 7-run cushion. Alberta took advantage of 6 Nova Scotia errors and received 2-hit games from Jeremie Fagnan (Calgary, AB) and Ryan Kosolofski (Edmonton, AB) to score their runs. Ethan Elias (Entwistle, AB) and Brendan Ethier (Calgary, AB) combined to strikeout 6 Nova Scotia batters.
