Baseball Canada Cup: Day 1 Recap

Kindersley, SK- All seven games that were scheduled at the Baseball Canada Cup were played on Day 1 in Kindersley, SK. The following is a game-by-game recap of the final four games played on the opening day of the tournament.

Game 4: Newfoundland-14 PEI-4

With both teams seeing their first action in Pool B Newfoundland (1-0) pounded out 9 hits and saw PEI (0-1) commit 6 errors to earn a 14-4 mercy-rule win. PEI jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the 2nd inning when Clark Gallant (Summerside, PEI) and Jordon Stevenson (Hunter River, PEI) scored on bases loaded walks and Connor Myers (Peakes, PEI) also scored on an error. Newfoundland however, took the lead in the 4th inning with 3 runs of their own. Daniel Phillips (St. John’s, NL) hit an RBI single for the first run of the inning which was followed by a PEI error bringing home Andrew Mercer (Mount Pearl, NL) and Bradley Sparkes (Bay Roberts, NL). In the 5th inning, Newfoundland would score 7 runs to build an insurmountable lead. With the score 6-3 and the bases loaded, Mercer hit a single up the middle that brought home two runs. Mercer would later score on a Dylan Moss (Mount Pearl, NL) RBI single. Starting pitcher for Newfoundland Daniel Hickling (Mount Pearl, NL) picked up the win throwing 6 innings giving up 4 runs, on 3 hits, walking 6 while striking out 9 batters.

Game 5: Ontario-5 New Brunswick-0

After losing an extra-innings heartbreaker to BC in their tournament opener, Ontario (1-1) rebounded with a convincing 5-0 victory over New Brunswick (0-2) in a Pool A game. Ontario put up 4 runs in the 2nd inning to take a commanding lead when Byron Reichstein (St. Thomas, ON) got his first of two hits on the afternoon by swatting a triple that scored Brian Doran (Ayr, ON). Not to be outdone by his teammate, Michael Foster (Pickering, ON) nailed a triple later in the inning to bring in 2 more runs. On the mound three Ontario pitchers combined to shutout New Brunswick. Timothy Black (Mount Hope, ON) struck out 5 batters in picking up the win.

Game 6: BC-9 Québec-2

BC (2-0) got their second win of Day 1 by defeating Québec (1-1) by a score of 9-2. BC held onto a 1 run lead until the 7th inning where they scored 6 runs to blow the game open. Tom Robson (Ladner, BC) was stellar on the mound pitching 6 strong innings that saw him strike out 9 batters to earn the victory. Québec starter Jesen Dygestile-Therrien (Montreal, QC) went toe-to-toe with his Junior National Team teammate on the mound recording 7 punch-out’s in 4 2/3 innings pitched. With the score deadlocked at 2-2 in the 3rd inning and 2 outs, Dustin Houle (Penticton, BC) singled and advanced to 3rd on a Daniel Peakman (Victoria, BC) base-hit. Houle would then score the go ahead run on an error from the Québec first baseman. BC dashed any hopes of a Québec comeback in the 7th by putting across 6 runs. Tyler Koslowsky smacked a bases loaded single that scored 2 runs and BC took advantage of 2 Québec errors to add to their lead. Kyle Joel (Maple Ridge, BC) came on to pitch the bottom of the 7th and struck out 2 batters.

Game 7: Saskatchewan-5 Manitoba-3

The final game of the day was a Pool B battle between hometown favourite Saskatchewan and their geographic rivals Manitoba. In the end the Saskatchewan (1-0) sent the crowd home happy defeating Manitoba (0-1) by a score of 5-3. Manitoba scored 1 run in each of the first 2 innings off Saskatchewan starter Tanner Spencer (Craik, SK). Torey Scott (Carberry, MB) led-off the game with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch. Saskatchewan took the lead in the 3rd on RBI singles from Lucas McKay (Moose Jaw, SK) and Justin Nychuk (Zehner, SK), Tyler Kendall (Estevan, SK) also scored on a bases loaded walk. After Saskatchewan increased their lead to 5-2, Manitoba inched their way back into the game in the 5th by scoring a run to cut the lead to two. Spencer worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th by striking out the final two batters of the inning. Manitoba wouldn’t go away quietly as they loaded the bases again in the 7th inning with 1 out. Payton Hillsdon (Moose Jaw, SK) was called upon to close-out the game and he didn’t disappoint by recording a strike out and inducing a groundout to 1st base to end the threat.

Notes: Earlier in the day Québec hammered New Brunswick 10-0, BC edged Ontario 3-2 in 9 innings and Alberta trounced Nova Scotia 8-1. ...
