Baseball Canada Cup: BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan Win Big

Kindersley, SK- Eight games are scheduled for Day 2 of the Baseball Canada Cup. The following is a recap of the first four games played.

Game 8: Alberta-12 PEI-2

PEI (0-2) suffered their second loss via the mercy rule, this time at the hands of Alberta (2-0). Alberta jumped on the board quickly in the bottom of the 1st inning when they recorded four consecutive hits to score 2 runs. Brendan Hendricks (Cochrane, AB) and Cory Scammell (Edmonton, AB) had RBI singles. Jordon Stevenson (Hunter River, PEI) doubled in the 2nd inning to bring home a run and Brody McDonald (Cornwall, PEI) had a run scoring single in 3rd inning to tie the game at two. Alberta broke the game open in the bottom of the inning with a 3 run outburst highlighted by a Kevin Czarnecki (Edmonton, AB) single to centre field which brought home 2 runs. Jake Hansen (Fort Macleod, AB) fashioned a 4-hitter through 4 innings that saw him walk only 1 batter while striking out 7. Alberta cemented the victory in the 5th inning scoring 7 runs to lead by 10 and ultimately end the game. Hendricks was the offensive star of the morning going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s.

Game 9: Nova Scotia-5 Manitoba-2

Jamie MacLean (Springfield, NS) struck out 7 batters as Nova Scotia (1-1) defeated Manitoba (0-2) by a score of 5-2 in a Pool B game. Nova Scotia had a shut-out going until the bottom of the 7th when MacLean allowed three consecutive singles to load the bases, which ended his afternoon. Dennis Millar (Oak Bluff, MB) promptly singled up the middle to score 2 runs and end the shut-out bid. Nova Scotia’s offence was paced by Colby Turple (Kennetcook, NS), Alex Ostrov (Timberlea, NS) and Gary Strowbridge (Dartmouth, NS) who collected 2 hits apiece. Nova Scotia also benefitted from five Manitoba errors.

Game 10: BC-15 New Brunswick-1

BC (3-0) continued its winning ways and has a firm hold of 1st place in Pool A after they dismantled New Brunswick (0-3) by a score of 15-1. The game was played in 6 innings due to the 10 run mercy rule. The defending champs scored early and often to put away the boys from New Brunswick. The BC offence was led by Brody Hawkins (Delta, BC) who scored 4 runs and added 3 hits to go along with 1 RBI. Jerod Bartnick (Surrey, BC), Daniel Peakman (Victoria, BC) and Justin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) each collected 2 hits and accounted for 8 RBI’s. BC’s Kenton Schroter (Nanaimo, BC) tossed the victory allowing only 3 hits. Cody Dickson (Miramichi, NB) scored New Brunswick’s only run on a passed ball in the 3rd inning.

Game 11: Saskatchewan-10 Newfoundland-2

Saskatchewan (2-0) made their presence felt as a contender in Pool B with a convincing 10-2 victory over Newfoundland (1-1). Eric Evans (Weyburn, SK) and Blake Campbell (Colonsay, SK) combined to strike-out 11 Newfoundland batters. Saskatchewan was also the beneficiary of 11 walks given up by Newfoundland. Chad Schultz (Swift Current, SK), Blake Campbell and Kyle Gimas (Regina, SK) scored 2 runs each in the victory. Bradley Sparkes (Bay Roberts, NL) collected 2 hits in the loss.
