Baseball Canada Cup: Day 2 Recap

Kindersley, SK- The following is a recap of all of the action on Day of the Baseball Canada Cup. All 10 teams have now played three games each.

Game 12: Alberta-13 Manitoba-6

Alberta (3-0) was too much for Manitoba (0-3) pounding out 16 hits en route to a 13-6 victory. Manitoba, who played their third game in less than 24 hours kept it close until the 4th inning when Alberta scored 7 runs to take a 9-2 lead. Garret Cyr (Spruce Grove, AB) and Markus Ferguson (Edmonton, AB) both had 2 run singles in the inning. A bright spot for Manitoba was Tyler Enns (East St. Paul, MB) who stroked a triple in the 7th inning that scored 2 runs. Alberta used four pitchers during the game which saw starter Chad Hodges (Medicine Hat, AB) pitch 4 innings in picking up the win. Several Alberta batters had multi-hit games including Jordan Procyshen (Calgary, AB) who was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI.

Game 13: Ontario-4 Québec-3

This Pool A match-up featured two teams that were 1-1 heading into the game. With the score tied heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, Ontario’s Daniel Pinero (Toronto, ON) hit a walk-off double to win the game. The win improved Ontario’s record to 2-1 and dropped Québec to 1-2. Pinero’s double was his third hit of the game as he led Ontario offensively. The game was tied after 5 innings and Québec took the lead in the 6th when Jean-Philippe Rousseau (St-Eustache, QC) scored on a wild-pitch. Ontario would tie the game in the bottom of the frame on a Brian Doran (Ayr, ON) infield single. Brandon Collins (Scarborough, ON) pitched a scoreless 7th to pick-up the win after Pinero’s game winning hit.

Game 14: Nova Scotia-4 Newfoundland-1

Nova Scotia (2-1) collected their second win of the day, defeating Newfoundland (1-2) by a score of 4-1. Anthony McKinley (Dartmouth, NS) was brilliant on the mound, pitching a complete-game two-hitter that saw him fan 10 batters. Newfoundland starter Andrew Mercer (Mount Pearl, NF) was also effective on the mound as he only allowed four hits. The four Nova Scotia hits came at key times as they were able to cash in base-runners. The first Nova Scotia run came in the 1st inning as Colby Turple (Kennetcook, NS) scored on a Gary Strowbridge(Dartmouth, NS) single. With the score 2-1 in the 6th inning, Nova Scotia tacked on some insurance runs when Strowbridge scored on a fielder’s choice and Brody Power (Halifax, NS) scored on a Nick Stackhouse (Halifax, NS) triple.

Game 15: PEI-10 Saskatchewan-8 (10 innings)

The final game of the day turned out to be a marathon affair as PEI (1-2) earned their first victory of the tournament by beating Saskatchewan (2-1) in 10 innings. In the top of the 10th Taylor Larkin (St. Peter’s Bay, PEI) hit into a bases loaded fielder’s choice that brought in 2 runs to give PEI the lead. PEI pitcher Jordon Stevenson (Hunter River, PEI) then recorded 2 strike-outs and a ground ball to end the game. The momentum switched many times throughout the game as both teams used big-run innings that saw the lead change four times. Brody McDonald (Cornwall, PEI) pitched 8 innings and stuck-out 11 batters. Offensively for Saskatchewan Aiden Marquardt (Regina, SK) and Garett Walbaum (Weyburn, SK) had two hits each while PEI received two hit performances from Tyson Arsenault (Summerside, PEI) and McDonald.
