Baseball Canada Cup: Rain Rain Go Away
August 14, 2010

Kindersley, SK- Three games have been played so far on Day 3 of the Baseball Canada Cup. Rain has hit Kindersley and the tournament is currently in a delay. The following is a wrap-up of the three games that took place.

Game 16: Ontario-3 BC-2 (8 innings)

Ontario (3-1) played BC (3-1) for the second time in the tournament and handed the boys from the West Coast their first loss. The two teams are now tied atop the Pool A standings with two games left to play in the round-robin portion of the tournament. It looked as though the game was going to be an offensive battle after both teams scored 2 runs each in the 1st inning. However, BC’s Nicholas Pivetta (Victoria, BC) and a combination of Ontario’s Daniel Pinero (Toronto, ON) and Roberto Suppa (Connor, ON) were able to hold batters off-balance all morning. BC had a chance to take the lead in the 7th inning when Kevin Biro (Deep Bay, BC) was on 3rd base with 1 out and four and five batters, Justin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) and Dustin Houle (Penticton, BC) coming to the plate. Atkinson ended up grounding out and Suppa struck-out Houle to end the threat. Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the 8th when Ontario’s Dayton Dawe (London, ON) scored from 3rd on a Brodie Jeffrey (Whitby, ON) single to give Ontario the walk-off win.

Game 17: Québec-4 New Brunswick-1 (10 innings)

Alex St-Jean (Gatineau, QC) and Travis Harris (Fredericton, NB) squared-off in a pitcher’s duel that forced extra-innings only to see Québec (2-2) score 4 runs in the top of the 10th to beat New Brunswick (0-4) 4-1. St. Jean pitched 9 innings and only gave up 2 hits and struck-out 11 while Harris threw 7 one-hit innings to keep the game scoreless. In the 10th with score knotted at zero Jean-Philippe Rousseau (St-Eustache, QC) scored the go ahead run and Kevin Bergeron (Terrebonne, QC) scored the would be game-winning run to give Québec the lead. In the bottom of the inning with New Brunswick already scoring 1 run to close the gap, they put runners on 1st and 2nd base but were unable to keep the threat going. Édouard Delage (St-Jérôme, QC) pitched the 10th inning for Québec and struck-out one batter.

Game 18: Manitoba-14 Newfoundland-0 (5 innings)

Manitoba (1-3) won their first game of tournament in a big way by blasting Newfoundland (1-3) by a score of 14-0. The game was never in doubt as Manitoba scored 7 times in the 1st inning to take a commanding lead. Manitoba sent eleven players to the plate in the inning on a count of 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 hit batters. Karlin Palidwor (Winnipeg, MB) cruised on the mound for Manitoba, pitching a 3-hitter while striking out seven. Dennis Millar (Oak Bluff, MB) and Matthew Benn (Teulon, MB) had big days at the plate with Millar going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Benn going 2 for 2 with 3 RBI. Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, MB) was also 3 for 3.
