Baseball Canada Cup: Day 3 Recap

Kindersley, SK- After a rain delay lasted nearly six hours, play resumed at the Baseball Canada Cup with three games played. The following is a recap of all three contests.

Game 19: PEI-5 Nova Scotia-4

PEI (2-2) won their second straight game, putting up 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to beat their Atlantic rivals from Nova Scotia (2-2) 5-4. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th, PEI loaded the bases with none out and received two straight singles and a fielder’s choice to tie the score. With Dylan McKenna (Cornwall, PEI) now at 3rd base, Andrew Hughes (Cardigan, PEI) singled to bring in McKenna for the winning run. Earlier in the game Nova Scotia broke a 1-1 tie in the 5th when Colby Turple (Kennetcook, NS) who had tripled, scored on a Gary Strowbridge (Dartmouth, NS) double who then scored on another double from Nick Stackhouse (Halifax, NS). Both starting pitchers went the distance as PEI’s Jordan Stevenson (Hunter River, PEI) tossed the win and Nova Scotia’s Alex Ostrov (Timberlea, NS) took the loss.

Game 20: BC-7 Québec-2

BC (4-1) got back on track after losing to Ontario earlier in the day by thumping Québec (2-3) by a score of 7-2. BC smashed out 8 hits and scored 3 times in both the 2nd and 6th innings. Dustin Houle (Penticton, BC) continued to stay hot at the plate collecting 3 hits including a triple in the 4th inning. Louis-Karl Pedneault (St-Bruno, QC) collected 2 RBI in a losing cause for Québec. On the mound, Quinn Allen (North Delta, BC) threw 4 2/3 innings of 2 hit ball and struck out 4 in picking up the win.

Game 21: Ontario-11 New Brunswick-5

Ontario (4-1) received hits from seven of their starters in cruising to an 11-5 victory over New Brunswick (0-5). In the 1st inning Brodie Jeffrey (Whitby, ON) and Daniel Pinero (Toronto, ON) had RBI singles as Ontario built a 4-0 lead. In the 5th inning with the score 7-1, New Brunswick would put across 3 runs to creep back into the game. Corey Wood (Fredericton, NB) who collected 2 hits on the game had an RBI single in the inning. Any hope of a New Brunswick comeback were quickly put to rest in the bottom of the inning as Ontario scored 4 runs to take a 7 run lead. Alexander Gagne (Orleans, ON) was credited with the win for Ontario.

Notes: The Alberta/Saskatchewan game has been moved to August 14th at 4pm CT....
