Ontario wins 13-7 against tough Newfoundland and Labrador squad

Trois-Rivières, August 19th 2010. - After losing 12-1 in it’s first game of the competition, Newfoundland and Labrador gave Ontario a strong opposition, but the Ontarians prevailed by winning 13-7, with catcher Kyle Smeelen leading the charge with a first inning three run double.

The Newfoundlanders scored three times in their first at bat. James Walsh and Justin Downey walked, Walsh scored on John Blackmore’s  sacrifice fly, Dylan Moss singled, Michael Delaney singled pushing Justin Downey home, Dylan Moss scored on a Mike Tavenor single to make the score 3-0 NFLD.

In the bottom of the first, Ontario took advantage of Newfoundland miscues to score six times. After loading the bases, Robert Carman and Tristan Beadle hit in consecutive fielders choice, to score two. With the bases full,  Kyle Smeelen cleared them with a three run double. Smeelen scored the sixth run on an error by  first baseman, Dylan Moss.

The Newfoundlanders regrouped to score twice in the second. Charlie Kelly and James Walsh walked, they both scored on a Justin Downey single, it was 6-5, Ontario. After a walk to John Blackmore, Ontario starting pitcher, Wayne Feltham gave way to reliever Kyle Taylor, who put out the fire.

In the third inning, Ontario went ahead 7-5. Tristan Beadle doubled, Christian Chavez singled, Beadle scoring on a double steal.

In the bottom of the fourth, Eric Wilton walked, stole second and went to third on a ground out. Matthew St-Kitts walked and stole second, Wilton scored on a Ryan Turner single, and St-Kitts made it 9-5, on a Robert Carman fielders choice.

In the bottom of the fifth, Christian Chavez and Kyle Smeelen hit singles, Andrew Nauth hit into a fielders choice to erase Smeelen, and Chavez ran home on a Eric Wilton single. Nauth scored the eleventh Ontario run, on a wild pitch.

In the top of the sixth, the Newfoundlanders narrowed Ontario’s lead, by scoring two runs. Jamie and Justin Downey both scored, on an error by Ontario second baseman Andrew Nauth, it was 11-7.

Ontario put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, scoring twice. Christian Chavez hit an RBI triple, he later scored on an error.
