Trois-Rivières, August 20th 2010. -In the third game of the second day of competition, at the 2010 Baseball Canada Pepsi Junior Championship, Newfoundland and Labrador scored three times, in the top of the seventh inning, to defeat New Brunswick 6-3. Pitcher Mike Tavenor’s single drove in the winning run.
The Newfoundlanders scored first, in the second inning, on a Mike Tavenor single, scoring Mike Delanay. They added two more runs in the fourth, when Tavenor hit another single to push Dylan Moss home. After a Dan Phillips walk that loaded the bases, Jamie Downie hit a sacrifice fly, plating Delaney, for a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, New Brunswick put four on the scoreboard, taking advantage of a shaky defence. With the bases loaded, Justin Cormier was safe at first on an error, Robert Gallant scored. Ben Steeves followed with a two RBI single, while Steeves was caught in a rundown, Justin Cormier ran home, for the fourth run.
Robert Gallant added a fifth run, on a sacrifice fly, to make the score 5-3.
In the top of the seventh, after two outs, the famous Yogi Berra quote: «It ain’t over, till it’s over», bit New Brunswick. John Blackmore walked, Dylan Moss singled, and Andrew Stockley was hit by pitch, to load the sacs. Michael Delaney hit an RBI single, scoring Blackmore. Mike Tavenor fallowed with a double, his third hit of the game, scoring two, to give his team the lead, 6-5.
New Brunswick’s Robert Gallant leadoff the bottom of the seventh, with a single, but it was too little, too late.
