Senior Women’s Invitational: Day 2 Recap

North York-After rain delayed the start of play, day-two of the Senior Women’s Invitational got underway late in the morning. The rain forced the tournament to be played on two different fields. Here is a recap of each of the 5 games played:

Game 6: Alberta-11 Quebec Midget-0

Shelby Gordon was the winning pitcher as Team Alberta continued to dominate by not allowing a run in 2 games.

Game 7: Québec- 12 Nova Scotia- 9

Nova Scotia erased an 8-0 deficit to score 9 runs in the 5th inning to take the lead over Québec. Not to be out done, Québec came back in the 6th inning scoring 4 runs to win the wild affair. Martine Nadeau came on in relief to pick up the win while Marie-Josée Tremblay was 4 for 4 at the plate. Meagan Bremner had 2 RBI’s to lead the Nova Scotia attack.

Game 8: Ontario-17 Ontario (2) - 7

The battle of Ontario turned out to be a slug fest with Ontario coming out on top. Melanie Harwood and Cindy Saavedra were both 4 for 5 with 3 RBI’s each while Louise Harris was the winning pitcher for Ontario. Hannah Martensen was 2 for 2 and 2 RBI for Ontario (2).

Game 9: Quebec Midget 3 - Nova Scotia 2

Nova Scotia suffered their fourth loss of the tournament after being edged by the Québec Midget’s. Cynthia Renaud earned the save in this exciting game and Emilie Breton had 3 hits and 2 RBI’s to highlight the Québec offence.

Game 10: Alberta-0 Ontario-1

This game featured a pitcher’s duel as Alberta’s Melissa Armstrong and Ontario’s Cindy Saaverda battled it out in a game that lasted only 90 minutes. Ontario scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 6th when Ashley Stephenson scored on a Saavedra sacrifice fly.

After day 2, Ontario remains undefeated with Alberta in 2nd place.

Notes: The Senior Women’s Nationals will run until July 25th at Bond Park. Please visit http://www.baseball.ca/seniorwomen/ to keep track of all the action. ...At the conclusion of the event players will be selected to try-out for the Women’s National Team. After the try-out process a team will be chosen to represent Canada at the Women’s World Cup in Caracas, Venezuela from August 12-22.
