2011 Women's ChampionshipsJul 27-31   North York, Ontario

Championship season is here!
July 27, 2011

Baseball Canada's National Championship schedule starts this week as both the Bantam Girls and Senior Women’s Invitational head to Bond Park in North York, Ontario.

The Bantam Girls event will feature five teams (two from Ontario and one each from Québec, Nova Scotia and Alberta) while the Senior Women’s Invitational will see a six-team field (two from Ontario and one each from Québec, Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Alberta) compete for the championship.

“We’re excited for a great week of baseball,” said Chair of the Host Committee, Heather Dobie. “We have two parks that will be in use and hopefully there’s no rain!”

With both championships being held at the same time and venue, it will give local female players a chance to see some of the best players in the country compete for a National Championship.

“It will be a big draw for our local teams to come and see the games,” explained Dobie, who is also on the Board of Directors for North York Minor Baseball.

The action kicks-off on Wednesday July 27th at 8:30am when Québec takes on Nova Scotia in both the Senior Women’s Invitational and Bantam Girls championship.

On Wednesday evening, a highlight for all of the players will be a trip to Rogers Centre to see the Toronto Blue Jays host the Baltimore Orioles.

“The teams will be going in uniform with their coaches where they can expect player announcements before the game,” said Dobie. “A highlight will definitely be getting to go on the field before the game.”

Another event that players and coaches can look forward to is a welcome barbeque on Thursday evening while taking in round-robin action from both events at Bond Park.

The Senior Women’s Invitational sees Ontario coming in as the defending champion after a 4-0 win over Alberta in last year’s Gold Medal game. This event will also be used as an evaluation tool to select the Women’s National Team that will head to Cary, North Carolina for an exhibition series beginning on August 2nd.

On the Bantam Girls side, defending champion British Columbia is unable to attend where they edged Ontario 5-4 in last years’ Championship game.
