Canada Games Baseball: BC and New Brunswick remain undefeated

SHERBROOKE- Two teams are undefeated after two days of competition at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke, QC with BC sitting atop the Pool A standings with a 3-0 record and New Brunswick leading Pool B with a 2-0 record.

BC 10 Ontario 0

After a rain delay lasting nearly one hour, Justin Lawrence (Surrey, BC) smoked a grand slam over the wall in left field to give BC a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Ontario. BC starter Kyle Ross (Maple Ridge, BC) picked up the win tossing five innings giving up only three hits, while striking out five.

New Brunswick 6 Newfoundland & Labrador 1

Sam Lund (Riverview, NB) went the distance throwing seven innings and striking out eight batters as New Brunswick picked up their second win of the tournament with a 6-1 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador. New Brunswick’s offence was paced by Chris Thomas (Fredericton, NB) who smacked two doubles and picked-up three RBI. Mathew Flynn (Gander, NL) had two singles and an RBI in a losing cause.

Ontario 7 Alberta 1

Ontario jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning giving them all the offence they needed in a 7-1 win over Alberta. Ellis Gerussi-Turner (Toronto, ON) picked-up two hits including a triple and had one RBI, while Nicholas O’Neil (Oldcastle, ON) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI as part of Ontario’s eight hit attack. Mitch Bigras (Sarnia, ON) earned the win tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings and striking out five batters.

Saskatchewan 7 Manitoba 6 (8 innings)

Perhaps the game of the day saw Saskatchewan score a run in the bottom of the eighth to get by Manitoba 7-6. Curtis de Pena (Winnipeg, MB) went the distance for Manitoba in the loss tossing 7 1/3 innings, while Saskatchewan’s Kade Erickson (Regina, SK) allowed only one run, which was unearned in four innings of work to pick-up the win. Reid Fritzke (Swift Current, SK) had a double and two RBI, while Manitoba’s Troy Blad (Mitchell, MB) and Skylar Canada (Boissevain MB) each homered in the loss.

Nova Scotia 16 Newfoundland & Labrador 6

Nova Scotia struck for 10 runs in the second inning and went onto mercy Newfoundland and Labrador 16-6 in five innings. Colan McCulloch (Kennetcook, NS) went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Nova Scotia while teammate Gregory Herritt (Halifax, NS) connected for two singles and drove in three. Jamie Whynot (Bridgewater, NS) also had two hits including a double and two RBI, and Colton Beach (Kennetcook, NS) tossed two innings and struck out four to record the win.

Manitoba 6 PEI 2

Manitoba broke open a 1-1 tie with five runs in the home half of the fourth to hand PEI a 6-2 defeat. Troy Blad (Mitchell, MB) allowed only one run in five innings of work and struck out six while also contributing a single and two RBI for Manitoba. Derek Millar (Oak Bluff, MB) scored two runs and had three hits, while Adam Nocita (West St. Paul, MB) and Drake Pilat (Winnipeg, MB) each had two hits and one RBI for the victors.

Alberta 14 Québec 0

Alberta scored runs in all but one inning as they cruised to a 14-0 mercy-rule win over host Québec in a game that experienced a rain delay. Catcher Michael Belliveau (Calgary, AB) led Alberta’s 13 hits attack going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, while Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, AB) went 1-for-1 with a double, scored three runs and had two RBI. Lloyd also tossed three scoreless innings on the mound allowing three hits and striking out four.
