Baseball Canada Cup: Canada Cup opens in Moncton

Opening Day at the Baseball Canada Cup in Moncton saw all ten squads in action with seven games played. Host New Brunswick gave the hometown crowd plenty to celebrate as they recorded two wins to take possession of first place in Pool B while Québec also recorded two wins to sit atop Pool A.

Action continues on Thursday with eight games on the schedule.

Québec 2, Ontario 0

Jason Begin’s two-out, two-run single in the sixth broke a scoreless tie and proved to be the difference as Québec blanked Ontario, 2-0. Québec received four scoreless innings on the mound from Antoine Jean who fanned three and recorded the win.

Nova Scotia 12, Newfoundland & Labrador 2

Nova Scotia recorded 12 hits and limited Newfoundland & Labrador to just two en route to a 12-2, mercy rule win. Nick Gravel led the charge with a 2-for-3 game at the plate that included a triple and two RBI while Ethan McLellan provided three scoreless innings on the mound including seven strikeouts.

PEI 7, Alberta 5

A four-run third inning paved the way for PEI as they held off a late charge from Alberta to open their tournament with a 7-5 victory. PEI received a pair of RBI from Josh Myers and relied on the pitching duo of Gabriel Penalver and Jack MacKenzie to come up wit the win. Michael Brisson had a double and drove in three runs for Alberta.

New Brunswick 6, Manitoba 3

All of the scoring in this one took place in the fourth inning as the hosts doubled-up on Manitoba, 6-3. The six-run fourth was highlighted by Ryan Scott’s two-run single in an inning that saw New Brunswick take advantage of five walks. Haden Dow picked up the win tossing four and two-thirds innings while Jordan Fortin came on in relief. Manitoba’s Tanner Boyle had two hits and an RBI in the loss.

Québec 7, BC 2

Québec moved to 2-0 scoring a 7-3 win over BC that saw Antony Gilbert drill a pair of doubles to drive in two while Cedric Degrandpre worked four and two-thirds innings on the mound to record the win. Dawson Clarke went 1-for-2 with an RBI for BC.

Ontario 7, Saskatchewan 3

Three home runs were hit in this contest that saw Ontario erase a 3-0 deficit to come away with a 7-3 win. Tyler McWillie gave Saskatchewan a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the fifth before Ontario received home runs from Austin Gomm and Ryan Leitch. Connor O’Halloran tossed three and two-thirds scoreless innings for Ontario that included five strikeouts before Jake Rogers came in to earn the win. Connor Sparks had six strikeouts over five one hit innings for Saskatchewan.

New Brunswick 7, Nova Scotia 3

Haden Dow went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead host New Brunswick to a 7-3 win over Nova Scotia to move to 2-0 on the day. Ryan Scott contributed a 2-for-5 game at the plate and drove in a pair for New Brunswick while Logan Sheasgreen also drove in two.
